Soccer player with untapped talent.

He could easily win.

Wouldn't say easily, as Ligons has split 46 in the 4x4, but absolutely should serve as good competition to if he keeps running consistently and healthily to make for a fun state final

Today most of the Calif. sections have their divisional finals, but in almost every case it just qualifies performers for next week "Masters" meets which is the qualifier for the CIF StateMeet the following week. It's a labyrinth, esp. in the stronger sections, like the Southern Section. So, for example, in the boys' 1600 the top 12 finishers regardless of division qualify for the Masters meet. The order of competition runs from the smallest schools (D4) to D3, D2, and D1 (the largest schools). So what happens is that aside from D4 the other divisions know they have to run fast in order to make it to the Masters meet. Tactical races are out of the question. I think the top 12 were all under 4:11, with Evan Noonan the fastest qualifier at 4:04.02. And next week they'll be hammering again in order to make it to the State Meet. The Southern Section is allotted five spots in the State Meet, but there's also "at-large" standards, which allows finishers beyond the top five to also make the State Meet. This year the state at-large standard for the boys' 1600 is 4:13.24. After running hard races in.their league meets, CIF SS prelims and now CIF SS finals I wonder how many will have something left in the tank. And then they go at it in the State Meet the week after Masters. No wonder many Calif. runners underperform in the post season races. They're burnt out.

does anyone know if there are at-large qualifier spots for cif finals to cif masters? It's a bit rediculous for someone to run 4:10-4:11 and not qualify because of how competitive it is

Were you aware that today is the team divisional championships for many teams? That matters to about 100 times as many coaches and athletes, even athletes that didn't make it this far but are cheering on their team.

You are looking at it from the perspective of the comparatively very few athletes that have a very good chance of going all the way to the state finals. Besides, California is an enormous state, without the qualifying rounds, what is the solution for deciding that small number of runners that get to compete in the state finals? Just base it on times, so track season becomes athletes chasing times, and only running races that are set up as time trials? Head to head racing seems the fairest, but yes, that means a lot of rounds. It is a big state.

Any idea why SS finals are way up in Moorpark?

why do they sell of the rights to broadcast cif finals? Why not let hdrunners do it for free? Same thing happened to cif state championships xc. Seriously it sucks

At least someone is broadcasting the CIF state track meet. CIF state xc doesn't show anything except the start and the finish.

No, at large performances are only taken from the state qualifying meet, which for the Southern Section is the Masters. No Masters, no at large entry into the state meet. Unfortunately, some very good runners are shut out of the state meet because they didn't advance to Masters. There are other competitive sections in California, but by far the Southern Section is the most difficult for athletes to qualify for State. Every year there's discussion about breaking up the Southern Section due to its enormous size and population, but that discussion never goes very far.

You make some good points and I actually agree with you that for most of the athletes and most of the sections the current arrangement is about the best they can devise. But that doesn't mean it's without problems, particularly for the Southern Section. The top athletes in many events could waltz into the State Meet from many of the other sections. For example, the LA City Section is much weaker than the Southern Section, with maybe only a few sprint and/or hurdles events having anything close to the Southern Section. In all other events LA City is much, much weaker. A 4:11 1600 runner from the Southern Section runner would almost certainly dominate the LA City section except for a rare outlier year. So you're correct that the gauntlet found in the Southern Section only affects the top performers there.

Where do you believe the SS Finals and Masters should be held? For many, many years Finals and Masters were held at Cerritos College, but no one in LA or OC gave a damn about the Santa Barbara and Ventura County schools making the trek to the LA-OC line. I’d lobby for UCLA to host every year. Nice facility, generally without the windy conditions that plague Moorpark. Anyone else have a suggestion for a permanent location for SS Finals and Masters?

This is just the tip of the iceberg. CIF track rules are antiquated at BEST. The entire system needs to be re-done - the only thing that should stay is the single-division state meet.

For starters, Oakland and SF shouldn't even be their own sections for track. SF should be part of CCS and Oakland should be part of SJS.

Southern Section gets twice as many (6) entries into the State meet then any other section. They other very competitive sections get 3 and the small/easy ones get 1.
