Same question as above poster .... is there some expectation that coaches or the school reach out to committed recruits or athletes currently being recruited with some type of communication - I realize they can’t commhnicate prior to having a new position cemented.

Great point! There are three coaches at USA Nationals that JJ Clark is very interesting in having on his Stanford staff. He has talked to all three at length. And offers have been made to two of them. Two of them are distance coaches. And one of them is a middle distance coach who coaches in the Pac-12. The ball is rolling!

I'm not sure I agree with this over generalization. When reading on this D3 program it appears they just started a few years ago. Maybe they started up with some runners who STARTED running in college - kids who couldn't even run 5 miles without needing to stop and walk. That sounds a lot like HS coaching, which it appears this coach was highly successful at doing in MT. I've seen a lot of D3 programs through the years with lesser developed team times than this one so the fact they are already "that" good since the program just started really is a testament to the job he did IMHO.

How well will he do in MT? Who knows, but it should be interesting to observe. You've got to think that recruiting wise he will have a lot of connections since he is from there. The Big Sky is very competitive in the distance events, so that is both a challenge and perhaps an opportunity when it comes to recruiting. I assume his recruiting skills are probably pretty good given at D3 there are no scholarships - and recruiting SAs for a D3 new start up must have been exceptionally difficult. With some scratch to use and a regional name behind him, I bet he does all right.

Is this further evidence of the current debate on this thread about HS coaches having trouble transitioning to college no matter how good you were at the HS level. This guy was a former 18 time coach of the year in Montana. Note: this isn't a commentary on his personality, how good of a family man he is, or any other non-coaching category, it's about results and the ability to produce them.

Speaking of city of brotherly love, is there any word on the distance assistant position at UPenn?

May took his team to NXN, his top guy was a stud, May was a finalist for National HS coach off the year in 2016 along with myself, neither one of us attended the ceremony, both of us moved on to the collegiate level instead.

The last year May coached HS in Montana he coached Chase Equall as part of that NXN team.

LaSalle coach Tom worked with Mick out there and ran at Iona. He would make sense. That opens up LaSalle head job for....drum roll....Brien Bell!

Anyone can take a HS freshman at 13 and make them better by 18. Literally anyone. Hell, the high school kid can do it on their own by simply running 5 days a week and hitting puberty.

Best distance coaches are high school? All college coaches do is recruit.

Statements like this are further indication that high school coaches are out of their league heading to college. If HS coaches were so good then why are no elites coached by them,?

A high school coach has the luxury of the structured home life and school hours. They don’t have to recruit. Recruiting is absolutely essential. The fact you think it is a negative only proves you have zero idea what you’re talking about.

No head coach in Philadelphia is leaving for an assistant position, even if it is for Mick Byrne.

The guy/girl is from Nova. And no Nova is not even really considered "city of brotherly love" more like suburbs outside Philadelphia.

Finally some good inside info. Henner in the hunt and Wakes new opening gives legitimacy to potential of Vanhoy and Chewens as well.
