I have a theory that the OP of this thread is the same deranged troll that is harassing Derek on Twitter with non-sensical tweets that everyone blocks (the writing of some of these posts are a pretty close match). I also have a theory that the OP of this thread is posting under multiple identities and has cheated at races and is why he is so defensive and deranged.

I can't even imagine caring enough about age-group placing at a road race to even think about cheating. I can't even imagine caring jack squat if some random other person cheats and 'beats' me. It's honestly insane to me that people care about that.
Ok, I admit it, If someone cheats and I lose a $40 check to Chuck-E-cheese, I'd be about $2 mad.
I'm not going to the Olympics or win many races and I realize that. Why give two sh!ts about one place?

I feel the people that are so upset about people 'cheating' are probably otherwise unathletic people that got into running late and never played any other sports or had any athletic success before 'winning' age-group road races. I can't imagine a sporting accomplishment that matters less than turkey trot placing. You have a watch, what more do you need? It's a hobby people.

You see, to elites like Ed Whitlock, those records meant a lot. To the weekend warrior, placing in an age group means something, and they would care if someone stole their accolades. Even to the back of packers, knowing that there is integrity is worth fighting for.

He never set a WR did he? I do see your point in that case though. But that is a rare exception.
If a weekend warrior cares about someone 'stealing their accolades' then they have issues of their own. It's like internet stalking people over a local bowling league. Pointless.
No WR was stolen. Meza is dead. No more cheating from him. People still trying to figure out which races he cheated in seem to have a loose grip on what actually matters in this life.

My take is that he loved running with all his heart and believed it was a thing worth coaching, mentoring, and preaching about. Early on he found that he could do a simple course cut and beef-up his results, thereby epitomizing to others how great a sport it was with hard work and devotion and those things he espoused. This made him feel good. So he did it again. And again. And when he found that those around him were caught up in this grand thing called running, he went overboard and started making it on happen on a world record level.
But it wasn't just about making himself look good. I think he was doing it so he could teach others what was possible, and he was willing to risk everything because the message was that important (in his eyes).
When he was found out, there was simply no going back. He couldn't say it was a joke because that is exactly contrary to his love of the sport. He knew that he had become the personification of what he hated most, and the message he was now sending was his ruination.
But what i think is hard to understand is that his unmitigated love for the sport may be the very thing that allowed him to turn a blind eye to the unspeakable evils he would commit to fulfill it. Ultimately, when he would have to reconcile the two in the face of public scrutiny, he simply could not.
This is one of the most ludicrous and half-baked justifications of long-term, calculated, remorseless cheating I've ever read.

I thought he didn't set a world record because he was disqualified for cheating? He ran 2:53 at the Los Angeles marathon which would have been the age 70 WR.

Perhaps rather than ignore cheating, it's more important to catch it quicker. Convince all RD's to leave DQ's in the results so other RD's have a reference point. That could assist in stopping it from happening again before it encompasses the fake runners' life.

Well, I’m just saying.... if I asked every single family member (father, mother, sisters, brother, in-laws, cousins, etc.) if they’ve heard of letrsun, I’d be thoroughly surprised if any of them have.

Yes, that's really all he had to say and then ignore running forums, newspaper articles and go on living his life.
Even with being a very bright individual he couldn't think of saying that as unfortunately there were too many external and internal pressures he was dealing with and it became "overload".
I could get into way more detail, but I'm pretty sure that's what he faced his last few days. Sad all the way around, but I wish he had talked to someone and realized that there truly was a way out and to save face with Family and Friends.

I usually don't say this, but I agree with this post 100%. He would have been fine if he did anything close to what the poster described. Just laugh it off as a joke and yes, people would have wanted to know the exact details out of sheer curiosity.

Come on! He was a freakin' coach! He was responsible for teaching good sports ethics for years and years. And then you expect him to turn around and say, 'well, kids, sure actually running a race is as important as i have been telling you all these years, but i just wanted to cheat for the last 10 years to show that it can be done!'
Bad, bad, strategy, and it undermines his more important message.

Yes, you indeed should give it up. I agree with the guy. He was showing the holes that exist in road racing, marathons in particular. He could have easily claimed that. Then, even if they let him go as a coach, many will believe that he was telling the truth in terms of why he did it (except for an expert like you---insert major sarcasm)---and life goes on, he's 70, not 50. Quicker than you or I believe, it's forgotten. Do you still talk about Lip Kitton? Do ya? I'm in the camp that he could have walked away from it and claimed it was a test or joke if you will, and that he intended to come clean when enough sh*t hit the fan.
