Jeptoo is exceptionally lean. She makes Deba and Dibaba curvacious.

Assuming a weight of 46kgs for Deba, if she loses 1kg (still not as lean as Jeptoo), AND can stay healthy doing it, she would run nearly 2.5 minutes faster today with the same energy output.

One of Jeptoo's greatest assets as a runner is her lack of "assets". It's not easy mentally or physically being that lean, and most of us just can't do it. If these women want to beat Jeptoo, they need to take a lesson from her. Mechanics are important, sure, but so is weight.

And the form clowns who said that Tergat lost because he did not have the proper form? Of course, this hilarious claim was made without ever managing to explain how Tergat was better than the other 6 billion people on the planet, many thousands of whom had 'better form'.

I can only hope that you are joking. Or do you actually believe that you can look at an elite runner and tell at what weight they would do their best running?

That's blazing, but if things went according to the forecast that's where she had the tailwind for 4-5 miles.

You're being really emotional and letting the first voice that pops in your head make you look a bit childish.

My point is that weight is often more important than mechanics, but going beyond a certain level of leanness is just not possible for most people. Jeptoo is able to sustain an extremely low level of bodyfat. If Deba, or Dibaba, or damn near any of us for that matter, could sustain the same low level of bodyfat as Jeptoo AND stay healthy they/we would be faster. That's simple.

If Jeptoo puts on 2kgs of fat, which would put her in the same bodyfat percentage realm as most of her competitors, she would run nearly 5 minutes slower, and of course be forced to take a risk in changing her mechanics or finding another way to make money.

Nice try but you have failed. You have absolutely no idea if any of these elite women are physically capable of running better based upon body composition.

Anybody else think Dean sounded like a jerk when they interviewed him (I'm watching the ESPN2/ABC 7 broadcast)? He says he "doesn't want to discount what anyone here has done" but talks about how this is a "short training run for him" - even though he just did a rather pathetic time for someone who is touted as the greatest ultramarathoner ever.

Anybody have an official time on him? 3:00, 3:01?

Who touts Dean Karnazes as the greatest ultramarathoner ever? Maybe the most well known, but has he ever beaten Scott Jurek or won Western States 7 years in a row? I think not.

Anybody else getting really tired of LRC continuously touting JK as some super genius because he correctly predicted a fast time somewhere? Sure, it is cool that he did so. But saying that a marathon will go fast because of a tailwind or slow because of a headwind isn't necessarily a sign of infallible insight.

Maybe it's just the fact that every time JK makes a prediction, the brojos have to preface it with "This is probably accurate because, hey, remember that time JK was right about Boston before?"

Me too. I have yet to see anything from JK to indicate he has anything more than an average understanding of the marathon. JKs "prediction" about a hurricane fueled Boston was done by me and many others long before JKs common sense utterance.

A small potted plant would say that the halfway mark this year would be over 1:05, especially considering that 1:05 HM marks have become the norm in perfect conditions.

I didn't have an anemometer with me on the course, but it sure felt like 15 mph winds, coming from exactly the direction predicted (NNW). The course actually tilts NE for most of the race, so it wasn't directly in our faces, but it was substantial and frequently gusty.

Of course I didn't feel the tailwind in the last 5 miles, but I have to assume it was there.
