But Trump and the FCC can threaten to take away licenses for speech that criticizes them, and Republicans will still have the audacity to claim that Kamala would've been worse. Found this in my Twitter feed, and I think it gets to something essential here. This is Kimmel's former co-worker, Adam Carolla on the firing:

He basically says that hosts should be allowed to make jokes even if they offend us "and then the ratings should do the talking." Then he makes a nice distinction between knowing someone as a "cartoon character" and as a "human being." The former is distorted to our own agenda, the latter seriously calls our agenda into question. He didn't think Kimmel should have been fired for what he said.

Bob Iger told Kimmel to apologize for blatant, flaming lies.

Kimmel's ego and financial security told Iger to kick sand.

Iger couldn't cancel Kimmel fast enough after that considering Kimmel's drag on finances and the brand.

Sure, there's plenty of indirect pressure from the FCC and the Trump administration to stop the non-stop one-sided attacks on Trump and conservatives but in the end Kimmel got what he asked for.

BTW, if Kimmel is so wonderful he should have no problem being his own boss on YouTube or other. Suggest you don't hold your breath waiting for Kimmel's next move.
