Alberto Salazar BANNED For Life for "Sexual Misconduct"

Safesport arbritation states its not a panel in a case like this, its a single person making the ruling so there is no need for consensus or unanimity. Having one person decide is like flipping a coin

I feel sorry for Mary Cain. Instead of following the normal progression from high school to college, then professional, she skipped four years and jumped into an intense program for mature athletes. At age 18 yrs old she was living across the country as far away from home as she could get. Yet she doesn’t appear to be a confident independent woman, more vulnerable. She was balancing running and college at the University of Portland as a chemistry student in the honors program, adding to her stress. None of this is Salazars fault. The blame should be on whoever pressured her to make all these dramatic life changes she wasn’t ready for. They should lose their careers for sexual misconduct.

I love reading your posts. You bring clarity and depth and some answers to questions we cannot find with Google. I think the point you made before about inconsistency is probably the biggest issue (that I have seen so far) with SafeSport. We need a SafeSport to investigate, to sanction in some cases, and to refer to higher authorities when appropriate, again with consistency. Reading your guidelines below seems like common sense, but no statute of limitations means actions may precede guidelines and training and the creation of SafeSport, and for actions as a young athlete and not a coach. It was disturbing to read about the case of John Coughlin posted earlier, an Olympic skater turned coach, who committed suicide at 33 due to third party allegations being investigated by SafeSport, all reported to SafeSport a decade or so after the fact, for what looks like dating two minors around his age, when he was a young skater, and dating an older teen of consent, again when he was a skater in his mid-20s. None of these incidents happened when he was a coach. The “victims” were apparently all on good terms with him, and the instances were reported by a third party.

I imagine that much of the testimony and evidence will make its way into the Cain lawsuit.

I wonder if Alberto wishes that BTC was already in existence when Kara came into his orbit so that she would have gone there instead. If Cain's parents had not called him back? Would Magness have raised the red flags he did if Kara had not gotten the ball rolling?

What would have had to happen so that none of this actually came out?

I'm all for protecting women, especially minors, but safesport is grabbing significantly more power than it was designed for. The end result is going to be that good coaches will stop coaching women because apparently they can get banned for any reason or for no reason at all.

Can a coach get banned for calling women's racing shorts "bunhuggers" which is the most common term for them?

If a coach gives an athlete a medium uniform instead of a small, is that the equivalent of fat shaming?

He crossed the line physically with at least one athlete he coached. SafeSport didn't hand this band out without good cause.

If Salazar treated his female runners with respect, there would have been nothing to come out. He shouldn't have been pushing them to lose weight but if he had at least done so in private, he would have been fine. Does anyone believe any of his female athletes ran even one second faster as a result of his obsession over weight?

I also believe his runners didn't benefit from him playing with the doping rules. Salazar pointlessly sacrificed his coaching career and reputation.

Pro athletes can lose their contracts if they aren't performing. It might sound "mean" to say you need to lose weight but these athletes might have been at risk of losing their contracts.

Sifan Hassan lost weight and is now breaking world records and has 2 olympic gold medals. Jordan Hasay loves Salazar, and Salazar actually helped her GAIN weight.

But this isn't to defend Salazar, the issue is the punishment doesn't fit the accusations. safesport is out of control.

Salazar the classic tragic figure. Never enough fame, never enough accomplishments. Hubris did him in.

From all of Salazar’s ADRVs, it turns out that Magness was the only athlete known to have received a banned method. WADA suggests that USADA should charge and convict him, as he is not eligible for a reduced or vacated sanction for substantial assistance until he is charged.

During those proceedings, it also came out that Magness dated one of the athletes.

It's not so much that Salazar wanted his his female runners to lose weight but that he berated them in front of the team. That's unacceptable and is what put him in his current predicament. Such behavior is unacceptable for any management position and would have gotten him fired. The incident with Gabe Grunewald shows that his intensity affected his judgement.

People talk about him unfairly receiving a lifetime ban but his coaching career was already over. Nike removed Salazar's name from a building and there is no chance they would have rehired him when his doping ban had expired. It would be the same for any other professional team and an elite runner would be crazy to want a cloud put over any of his accomplishments by having Salazar as his coach.

what is a professional coach supposed to say if their star runner is all-of-a-sudden gaining weight to their detriment? Butt, belly and legs starting to get fatty, for whatever reason. Make sign language gestures? Or is that also sexual misconduct to do sign language? Questions many of us want to know. I am so glad I am out of the coaching game, a decade ago. Seriously, what can you say so as not to upset the person and have them running to SafeSport?

Exactly. In terms of Mary Cain, this sums it up very well. Had not seen a single post here that put at least partial blame on the parents of Ms. Cain.

You don't know that.

Salazar should be more concerned at this stage with Mary Cain's $20 million lawsuit against him and Nike. I also imagine that Mrs. Salazar has a few pointed questions about what was in the decision as well.

The “plaintiff” alleges Salazar crossed the line with another athlete. It’s irrelevant as it doesn’t involve the plaintiff. Rumors are not admissible in legitimate judicial hearings.

All great questions. And once again, how the hell did SafeSport, set up to protect minors from abuse coaches and staff, end up regulating the behaviors of coaches and staff toward PROFESSIONAL RUNNERS, who have all the advisors, lawyers and agents at their disposal to handle disputes with coaches ?
