Rinker was in over his head at Northeastern as a stop watch holder. He was doomed to fail miserably at LSU.
The HC clearly wanted a yes man and rinker fit the bill. I suppose because it came off the heals of having Khadavis there who is anything but a yes man. Unfortunately for rinker, he wasn’t a very good coach. Dad’s training won’t work for everyone(it did for Palin) but daddy had never coached an elite 800 runner at James Madison. I used to live in Portland and I know mark, he’s a great guy but P5 may have been too much for him. Pay your dues right?

JJ should go after Garrett Heath as a top assistant. He's a Stanford alum, super smart, great demeanor, towards the tail end of his career. I know he doesn't have the coaching experience, but he certainly is more than qualified.

Being an elite athlete is very different from coaching at the highest levels. There are many skills to be learned. JJ won’t have time for learning if he wants to be there longer than 3-4 years.

I never knew Rinker was the son of the JMU coach. Just never put the pieces together. Northeastern distance is underachieving in a big way, but JMU is even worse. JMU should be bringing a team to Nationals every year. They stink at recruiting because elder Rinker is loathsome. So they overpay for mediocre talent. And the talented girls they get all end up running terrible. Like father like son, I guess.

Recruiting is a young man/women’s sport. Old geezers have a hard time these days bringing in talent having a hard time relating to them.

Yea, keep telling yourself that. Tell Mark Wetmore that some YOUNG inexperienced unproven person does it better.

You guys named like 2-3 of the best coaches in the ncaa period. They make up a good .001% of the ncaa coaches. Generally speaking, with regards to recruiting at all colleges not just P5, it is starting to shift to give the younger coaches an advantage. Relating to these up and comers is becoming increasingly more important. I am 53 years old and started to realize this these past few years.
Most of the older P5 head coaches don’t recruit, they have designated recruiting coordinators. I went to a school in the Big 10 and only talked to the head XC coach once.
Let a young man have those name brands to recruit with and see what happens.

They don't recruit, because they don't have to. recruiting is a time consuming pain in the ass. When you can, you pay someone else to do the things you don't want to do.

I don’t believe for one second you are 53. Absolutely lying. As much as you young guys want your shot, you better keep in mind that the person hiring you is in their 50s and the parents of these athletes you’re recruiting are also in their 50s.
It takes years to develop your own style and method of training. A style and method that improves everyone, not just a couple of kids. The younger you are the less experience you have of developing a training program that is much different than your own or something you read in a book.
Grow up kids.
