Headline lacks his title "Dr." He has the ego to enter races as Frank Meza, M.D. Dr. should be in the damn headline. Without it, average readers aren't going to even look at it.

As said above, it says he was caught reentering the course after peeing, but the article completely fails to mention he was captured for over a minute standing still on the side of the course, then again for prolonged break stretching in the background of other runner's photos. The article should have stressed that these 2 breaks would not be compatible with a sub 3 hour marathon.

I was amused that they called Derek an amateur. "Derek Murphy, an amateur sleuth who operates the site from Ohio, looked back at numerous races, compiling an array of data, photographs and video that he considers incriminating."

For the average reader, I find the 3 key takeaways in the article to be:

1) In the process of disqualifying

2) DQ'd twice from CIM

3) No comment from his former runner

A complete and utter failure by the LA Times. What is going on in LA? No wonder journalism is on the ropes. Complete incompetents handed a slam dunk of a story rife with proven cheating, local "prominence", lying and probably some deeper malfeasance and they basically ignore all of it. Cheating at triathlons and marathons for over 10 years...possibly more.

Anyway, Frank, this isn't going away buddy. At least it seems like a DQ is on the table. If they don't, a boycott of their sponsors has to happen. I really can't stand this Meza guy. What an atrocious POS. Oh, he's never running another marathon, LA Times. Duh.

I was thinking the same thing. I believe we have a real nut on our hands. Is there anyone who can investigate to find out if he is really a doctor? I think his whole life is a fraud.

I just pieced together some training info from Daniels, Lydiard,, Canova, Pfitzinger, and others. Basically, the point is this: If running is “not fun” and you’re “losing sleep” because your times are subject to scrutiny, you can expect your marathon time to drop from 2:53 to 3:50 or 4:00. In every controlled scientific study, this precipitous decline has occured in no more than 6-8 months. The only other likely outcome is that, even if if you’ve run and raced steadily and in good health for decades, you’ll suddenly incur injury and never be able to race again. Because FM is an outlier who overhydrates at the fountain of youth, I’m hoping he’ll be able to avoid this outcome,. To be on the safe side, though, he could just knock out a 19 minute 5k in the next week or two, observed and with GPS, before he’s afflicted. Should be easy for any sub-3 guy, even in base training. “I don’t know what else I can do”? That would be a start.

Th LA Times story looks o.k. to me. Wharton can't force Frank to admit it and for whatever reason he is not making an outright accusation himself at this time.

He makes it clear that while these allegations might be hard for some to believe it happens pretty often.

It showed that Doubler is smart, and has been right before, is respected by race directors.

Shows that Frank got caught before and didn't fight it. That he has been disqualified before and likely will be again. Frank looks like he's bad at making excuses and he has gotten caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Diaz is easy for the reader to think of as biased and either dishonest or not too smart...especially since the other runner declined to comment.

Wharton could have pointed out that even a much younger man with those Moobs couldn't run that time, and many on LR still wouldn't be happy. It's true many people who post here probably are entrenched in bitterness and unhappiness.

It's the reporters job to paint the picture.

All in all, it's all there to see , except for an bold font accusation, or an admission.

Not that we need anymore proof since it has been proven over and over again but I still can’t believe not one person has ever came on and said they ran with him.

I live probably 20 miles from Gene Dykes. One day talking to my son he told me he saw an older guy flying by in the opposite direction. I sent him a picture of Gene Dykes and he confirmed it was him. The local news did a story on Mr. Dykes and he went out for a run with cameras running. Imagine if Meza would do this. Also there is 100’s of runners in this area that can verify seeing at local races or him running with others. Meza has just this one idiot Diaz vouching for him.
