Hang in there, mate. One day (or hour, or minute) at a time.
Sober since 07.27.2014. My best to everyone who has quit, is trying to quit, or is thinking about quitting.
Going for day 1 today.
I'm on beer number 6. Been a lurker here. Drinking most evenings. Don't really see any downside. No headaches or really any issues. I know that just cuz there's no disaster happening doesn't mean I couldn't be using my time better. I didn't have anything yesterday. Anyway, when I think about it, I'd rather not. Then, after work, I'd rather. It's a thing, but I'm not sure I even want to do it, but then I think about it. It's not an issue of not being able to quit, I think. Just don't know if I want to.

That's cool. I just reached the point where I couldn't do that...
Sober since July 30th 2016. The alcohol is a thing that I just don't need anymore. TIME HELPS. Go day by day at first, fight when you need to (I didn't have to, only in the days 1-2 after the last few (7) beers, because I was still on my vacation). I really wasn't a heavy drinker, but felt like even once per week is way too much. It will mess up your brains and personality slowly, or at least has a noticeable effect on you, which you might notice only after a long time without any alcohol. You might find yourself from a liquor store at times, but you can always put the bottles back and go away. Buy some sweets or so instead. If you get those feelings that now I got to have alcohol, drink water instead and/or fill you stomach by food immediately. The feeling goes by and you will be happier afterwards, without any hangover.
And remember, if you have been without it a while and then some day you just don't care and drink some, more or less, it doesn't mean that all the days without it was pointless. You're in a right direction. Just continue day after day without that poison and the cravings will subside.

Excellent post. Thanks.
You're welcome!
7 days. I didn't think I'd survive the weekend but I did.
I’m on day 2 of a hangover. Feel tired and crappy still. I don’t drink very often and Saturday was a bit of a barn burner. How I feel today reminds why I don’t drink very often. Alcohol is definitely poison.
The holiday season is filled with endless parties and social situations where drinking is expected. I’m not and drinker and I feel the pressure (like Saturday). So here is me wishing all of you who have quit the strength to get through this season without drinking and have a healthy holiday - and to everyone else - never pressure anyone to have a drink. If you choose to drink, that’s great, but if someone chooses not too that’s also great. Don’t make people feel awkward or out of place because they don’t want to drink, be better than that.
15.
I went to a housewarming party on Saturday and thought for sure I'd give in. There was tons of wine and beer but I had a coke. Yay, me!

And one bad day doesn't mean it's all over, either. It's one day. Then you take care of business the next day.
I'm friends with someone who's gone about 30 years sober. If she slipped tomorrow, that wouldn't mean that the last 30 years were a waste--she's still done herself a huge favor for 30 years.
Congrats on keeping it going. Take care of today.

This is the only letsrun thread I enjoy reading anymore, keep it up

Excellent point, this. If you slip, you haven't undone everything. Just get back on the horse (or the wagon).
I'm nearing 44 years of age, and started drinking what I would classify as regularly around my 40th birthday. In these 4 years I've gained around 45 pounds and don't run anymore. It was a weekend here and there, then it was every weekend, then every weekend plus a mid-week bumper, and now it might be Friday through Monday, off Tuesday, drink Wednesday, off Thursday, and repeat.
I don't like beer, so it is Whiskey (of all types...Scotch, Bourbon, Irish, Japanese, Rye, etc). It has become a bit of a hobby to collect and try. My little man-cave bar has about 30 types of whiskey at any given time.
My brother and dad are both alcoholics (probably the main reason I refused to drink most of my life). I really do not think I have a problem AT THIS MOMENT, but even I cannot deny the increase in frequency and I think within a year I might feel like I need a drink everyday. Plus it's expensive. About $300 a month (Can't drink rotgut stuff).
So I decided to stop on Dec 10, which makes this Day 3 for me. No issues that I can see. Don't have a craving, nothing physical like headaches or irritability or unable to sleep. Might be hard on New Year's eve and I'll probably even drink since we had planned a big Whiskey Tasting evening at my place. So my goal is no drinking between Dec 10 and Dec 31, then to start again Jan 1 until who knows when.
There are two goals: Losing weight and proving that drinking is not important, and resetting so that it is a once or twice a month thing and not every weekend or more.
