Motive? To raise money for CF and to inflate his ego. He would've raised more money by starting at the back and finishing at the front than he would've if he started at the back and finished mid-pack. Additionally, read the anonymous e-mails in the New Yorker article tipping off newspapers/running sites to the amazing running dentist.
Character witnesses may be helpful at sentencing, but during a criminal or civil trial they are rarely used.
Eyewitnesses? None have come forward, aside from an alleged teenager who just happens to remember Kip from a RFTC several years ago.

The amount of circumstantial & real evidence out there, plus email correspondence & a copy of Singer's 'interview' with Kip would bury the good dentist. You are delusional to think otherwise.
On a separate note, the whole starting at the back of the pack by several minutes & raising charity money per runners passed enroute to the finish could be far more easily attained by simply starting at the front and counting all those behind him at the finish = same difference & less a bother. It's a dumb ruse & one more implausible explanation for his tardy starts.

I see two sides here- wild claims from those who know nothing about Kip and others who know him well that refute those claims. I'll say the latter has more credibility. There is an astounding amount of incorrect info in this thread, both running related and otherwise. I will shed light on the real Kip. I have known him since he was 12 yo.Was he mischievous as a kid? Yes. Has he ever broken the law or been unethical? Resounding no. We have watched him grow from a typical kid into a fine adult and family man. We have seen him inspire others as he started running and lost significant weight. There were no short cuts- he would get up early in poor weather and run 12 or 15 miles before going to a full day's work. Over a number of years he earned his place as a solid runner. He has set a tremendous example and is a great dad. Along with his lovely wife they have inspired others while raising their special needs child. Kip is one of the most liked and well respected professionals in the area. Beyond a shadow of a doubt Kip is nothing like the person portrayed here. I could not be prouder of my association with Kip and his family. If you really knew him you would be also.
Next we'll be hearing from his high school principal, the doctor that delivered him, and God.
Amazing how so many of Kip's old friends and associates have found this thread. Letsrun is a lot more popular than I would've thought!
Wild claims? They're backed up by photographic evidence coupled with data from timing mats. Also common sense. When 99.99% of a race's participants run a certain way (e.g., starting in the same clothes/shoes they finish in, starting with runners of similar ability, hitting sll timing mats, etc.), the one participant who habitually bucks convention can and should be singled out.
Once or twice my chip didn't registered at a road race. Once or twice have photographers missed me. Once I wore a long sleeved shirt to the start of a chilly, long race. All those things didn't happen to me at EVERY SINGLE RACE I ran.
When one of Kip's supporters can provide more evidence than, "I've known him for years and he's a great dentist and his sh*t don't stink and he's got a lovely wife," I'll start listening.

Although a few oddities were discovered, it was determined that he could not be disqualified in any of the races.
