What does it mean when it says "Peres Jepchirchir smashed the women-only world record by 45 seconds" what even is the women-only world record. I though Tigist Assefa was the women's world record holder in 2.11
Another made up record (not world record) to give out more awards!
That's totally OK. Compare with Swimming, they've got at least four categories, indoor and outdoor pools (really only different for spectators LOL) over 25 and 50 meters, six categories if you count open water lanes. The best swimmers get medals and award money practically thrown at them for just falling into water.
Did Michael Ko (kofuzi) start? I can't find him in the tracking app.
#39292 - he showed his bib on his Instagram. He's using his 'real' name here. I have no idea what he was aiming for but he's predicted to finish in 3h13...
Wheelchair athletes laughing and joking at the finish. Max HR 130
I was a dick for typing that, sorry.
They have been dealt a tough hand and are inspirational people.
Just frustrating them trying to cover, essentially, 4 races at once.
It's not like the organizers and broadcasters haven't been given more than twenty years to recognize the coordination problem and do something about it! You have nothing to apologize for!

I'd argue this is the real record because it's equivalent to the men's record. In a women's only event you don't have pacers taking you all the way to the finish line, just like in the men's event.
Until today we had more women under the standard than men! Cali Thackeray, 2.23, Charlotte Purdue, 2.23 and Rose Harvey also has the standard after a fantastic run in Chicago. Wouldn’t describe them as F rate.
Women’s qualifying standard is always much weaker relative to the best. 2:23 is not even remotely competitive on the world stage. They are purely there to make up the numbers
How fast did Molly S run before she got bronze at the last Olympics? Thackeray has run 2:22:17 not 2:23. Might not be among the world best but you can hardly describe that as an F performance.
Surprised Assefa did not made a move way earlier, must've been inexperience on that course, Sifan did sooo much better last year in that position, as if Assefa missed guts. Never expected that.

I thought the same. She looked very relaxed the whole way round. And she has top 800m speed. So I was expecting her to sprint and go from about 1k but she just never did. Need to rewatch the tussle on the last corner too as not sure what happened there.

On the last corner, very interesting, seemed same tactics as last year, pure experience and calculation running of that specific course, by Peres. It was a mean little cut of she did.
KB will be named to the team, but if not there should be some sort IOC/WA override that puts him on the team regardless or bestows upon him a wild card berth. I think every fan of the sport, and there are so few of us, wants to see KB and EK race in Paris. If they are racing for a medal, amazing, but if they are racing for 10th, that would be ok. Both of them MUST race in Paris even if their federations try to mess this up. Maybe a new rule where any former Olympic gold medalist (in any athletics event) with a qualifying time in a given event gets in…..honor the legends who are still reasonably competitive.

Kipruto, Kiplagat, and Lemma go out at 2:02 pace. Kipchoge goes with them.
Bekele, Mantz, and Young go out together at a relaxed 2:08 pace while chattering in Amharic about their favorite Disney movies and board games.
Kipchoge gets dropped around 25K and the other 3 stay together for another 5K or so when Kiplagat falls back. Lemma surges to drop Kipruto but Kipruto answers. They slam a couple of 4:30 miles and then blow up and both drop out.
Kiplagat is hurting at 35K and Kipchoge passes him. He is leading now. Bekele began to accelerate after 30K and dropped Mantz and Young shortly thereafter. He passes Kiplagat at 38K and can now see Kipchoge ahead of him. He speeds up more and catches Kipchoge with 2K to go. Kipchoge matches him, and the two 48 year old rivals are nearly sprinting for the win. In the last meters of the race, Bekele out kicks Kipchoge. He is probably the oldest man to win the Olympic marathon.
