Russia is already paving the way for a post annexation rule and it is pretty brutal. Loyal Ukrainians are being shipped off to Russia for resettlement. They will undoubtedly be replaced by Russian loyalists and any Ukrainians left behind will either leave or be subject to brutal oppression if they step out of line. Just look at Chechnya if you want to see what happens when a Russian puppet government takes over.
Russia is banking on (no pun intended) a non-aligned movement to keep its economy afloat. Russia thinks that the BRICs will form closer economic ties and other third world countries have close ties with Russia because of reliance on Russian arms exports, gas, steel, fertilizer and grain. Of all the things that Russia is doing, this might actually be somewhat successful. Many third world countries have been decimated by US and EU colonialism and ravaged by IMF policies. They would happily turn to Russia for trade and finance if (and that is a big if) Russia had something to offer.
Eastern Ukraine does have natural gas and black soil (very fertile breadbasket grain production). Russia is already looting Ukraine's agricultural production.
But, as you note, Russia has pissed off all the countries with money. As much as Russia has done to prepare itself for financial sanctions, it has not prepared itself for trade sanctions. Russia imports a lot of stuff. Its domestic auto industry is all but shut down because they cannot get parts due to sanctions. The oil industry is also facing a very difficult road because they rely on Western firms for most everything they do, from exploration to production to refining and all the equipment used along the way. So, Russia is also betting on short memories and greed in its hopes that there will be breaks in alliances against it.
