Too many conditions that make flying risky. People prefer the option of more rapid response to air disaster, even if futile.

You still don't understand this at all. You are assuming that there is a force in space that pulls all things down, similar to gravity on a planet. No such force exists. North is up and south is down on a map of earth because that's the way the earth's magnetic field exists and for no other reason.
Your tennis ball analogy isn't proving anything because anyone who did that experiment would be standing on earth, where there actually is a force pulling it downward. In space that rule doesn't apply because there is no "down" or "up" and no external force pulling matter in either direction. All directions in space are relative to other objects. It's very hard to imagine this since we have lived our entire lives with definite up and down directions and constant gravity, but it's true.

Mankind has known the earth is a sphere for thousands of years. Ships sailing to the horizon slowly sink into it until they disappear below it. Things like refraction and the fact that the earth is not a perfect sphere make it possible to see things that would be beyond the horizon on a perfect sphere.

Living in Australia, you realize when you fly that there is no way the earth is a sphere. There is no way to explain why it takes twice as long to fly to South Africa than Spain
