Total GDP / divided by the number of residents. Not that difficult a concept. Although in their defense, the image on the link you shared was for total GDP, not per capita GDP. That being said, there are plenty of supposed rich people in California that are poorer than your average joe in a midwestern state simply due to economies of scale. When adjusted for purchasing power, places like California, New York and New Jersey have some of the highest poverty rates in the country. California is a dying state.
