2014 College Track and Field Open Coaching Positions Discussion

It is not impossible to move up from quality mid-major programs; however, Duck Whisper's original comments are fairly spot on with regards to the most practical way to get a job in the P5 world.

I would like to make two comments regarding this 3000+ post thread.

Firstly if you want to get into coaching at the collegiate level, make sure you know what the job actually is. Do not waste time complaining about how the job is not what you want it to be. It is NOT primarily about improving the performances of athletes. It IS primarily about serving as a representative of the university. You will do this in a variety of ways. Some of them will involve training athletes.

Secondly, I have worked in very large P5 athletic depts. I have worked in small "mid-major" athletic depts. I have coached "elite athletes" to the world champs and Olympics. These are 3 COMPLETELY different jobs. You will find that everyone is better suited to one type of job over another. I know great elite coaches who are terrible collegiate coaches, and I know very successful P5 coaches who would be dead last in the Sun Belt. The most important thing I have found is to determine which of these jobs makes you the happiest. There are pros and cons to all of them. What worked great for my life in my 20's was not such a good fit in my 40's. Good luck!

Great post Sammy Seems and Wild Duck. I too can testify that both of you are right on. Coaching is only about 10-20% of the job. It is everything else that makes the difference.

Ross is as good a throw coach out there! He has had the worst luck you can imagine running into douche bag head coaches - wrong time in the wrong place!! Great guy and Great Coach! Congrats Ross!

Who did Maryland hire for the jumps job?

Ross is an outstanding coach. Not his fault that Karen Dennis retained nearly all of her staff while letting the men's staff go. Stuff happens in collegiate coaching. He'll be just fine

Not sure of the name but hear OSU is hiring a female throws coach from Temple.

Clarion? They are terrible, but could they be decent? What does it pay...25k?
