Looks like dementia Joe hid in the basement all week. After the horrendous last couple of weeks I guess his handlers told him to not come out.

He has been a failure. Crisis after crisis. And it’s only been 2 1/2 months. I give him to October at best before he is removed or resigns.

Same trends continue - increase in cases but not deaths.

It's been 17 days since cases started nudging back up. Deaths have fallen steadily - no sign of a turnup.

But

No one is sure how much to trust testing data anymore since dramatically fewer cases are being done. Maybe a third fewer now vs January 21.

So the surge could be worse than it appears by testing numbers.

Deaths are plunging. Down around 30% from mid-March.

Warning lights in FL though - seeing rises in cases and deaths there.

I have been critical of the current adminstration's lack of a marketing campaign to get more people vaccinated - especially groups that are hesitant. The adminstration has finally decided to launch a campaign targeting these hesistant groups.

The Biden administration on Thursday morning announced an ambitious advertising campaign intended to encourage as many Americans as possible to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The campaign, with ads in English and Spanish that will air throughout April on network TV and cable channels nationwide, as well as online, comes as the administration is rapidly expanding access to coronavirus vaccines but skepticism about the vaccines also remains high.

But deep skepticism about the vaccine remains a problem, particularly among Black people, Latinos, Republicans and white evangelicals....Among Republicans and white evangelical Christians, almost 30 percent of each group said that they would “definitely not” get a shot.

Administration officials still expect to soon face the possibility of supply exceeding demand if many Americans remain reluctant to be vaccinated. With cases rising in some parts of the country again and variants spreading, getting as many people as possible vaccinated will be critical to containing the pandemic and allowing a return to a more normal way of life.

Here in Georgia, we are open for business with the governor lifting restrictions on mass gatherings, social distancing in restaurants/bars, etc., and shelter in place for vulnerable populations a few days ago.

We are currently the state with the 5th most confirmed cases of the B.1.1.7 variant (FL and MI are #1, & #2) and most of the state's kids are about to get out for Spring Break. Probably not a great time to lessen restrictions. However, these restrictions that were rolled back weren't followed or enforced for the most part anyway.

Also, as the NYT article in the previous post noted, large numbers of African-Americans and white evangelicals are not getting vaccinated. Georgia has a large population of both groups. Evangelicals, in particular, have resisted any COVID-related restrictions in GA through the pandemic. It is not surprising that they are deciding to not get vaccinated. Science be damned.

Hopefully, since the majority of the vulnerable population has been vaccinated, hospitalizations and deaths will not follow the inevitable rise in cases Georgia will see this month.

And this is FULLY independent of whether or not he ACTUALLY deserves any credit for that.....

I don't want to open up a can of worms here, and I'm not picking a fight with you or anything, but at what point do we just accept that some people aren't going to get vaccinated? Either make it a requirement in order to do just about anything, travel anywhere, etc. or let people deal with the consequences of their decision?

the problem with that is that we are a herd.

If millions of selfish ignorant people don't get vaccinated then we'll never kick this thing. It will fester forever.

Schools won't open because teachers won't show up

businesses will suffer because fewer people will want to be in crowded spaces

medical people will continue to be overwhelmed and not treat other issues.

The problem with the economy is covid. We can't thrive unless we get herd immunity. So the gummint is right to push push push the selfish and the ignorant to get vaccinated.

And of course criminal trump got his vaccination in the cover of darkness, so he doesn't appear weak to the rubes who won't get vaxxed. Lord what an awful, awful, man.

I agree with you. There is a point of diminishing and zero returns on vaccination campaigns. I think informational campaigns will help increase the numbers for some groups. Others like evangelicals will likely not respond to vaccination facts or science campaigns. We have to get it in the Bible somewhere for them to believe it. :)

I go back and forth on the requirement for commercial travel, attending sporting/entertainment events, etc. On one hand, it will incentivize people to get vaccinated. On the other hand, do we really want to go that route. We're divided enough as it is. Unfortunately, with a virus this contagious, the consequences of someone's decision has a significant affect on others. It's not an easy decison either way.
