Germany has always been one of the powerhouses of world sport, but invariably in the 70's and 80's West Germany, with a much bigger population, was behind the GDR in medal tables. That in itself should tell you a lot.
I for one have never stated that Communist countries = bad and cheats, while West = good and clean. But there was a clear difference in that the USSR, GDR, etc, actively encouraged, nay forced their athletes in most events to cheat through drug use, for political reasons not financial gains. This was not the case in the example you give of the US. In the USA there was doubtless some corruption with the Federations covering up those found to have previously taken drugs. They weren't actually handing out the steroids and syringes!
The example you give of Lewis and the 84 Olympics and thereafter is a well known one. It comes as no surprise that there were cheats from the USA, and most of those were also sprinters and throwers, who were the groups that were known to benefit from steroids, as I have previously explained.
What you fail to mention is that the 84 Games were the first in the professional era for track and field athletes. It was also a home games for the Americans, so there was a huge financial gain to be made for US track and field stars. Prior to82/ 83, when trust funds for athletes were started, the sport was amateur. Yes, of course there were back handers and cash in brown envelopes under the table, but the amounts were trivial compared to the money to be made on the Grand Prix in 85 and thereafter. The financial incentive for western t&f stars to succeed was overwhelmingly there from 85, but was not there in the late 70's and first 3 years of the 80's.
All the evidence you provide is to support the increase use of drug use in US sprinters from 1984 onwards. Where are the US middle distance runners testing positive or being covered up? How come all the names that we now have of those with dodgy or covered up samples are those belonging to sprinters, jumpers and throwers?
Moreover, what does the increase use of drugs and cover up by the US federation from 1984 and thereafter, got to do with the theme of the thread or to the suggestion by most that Coe was using peds?
We know that the East European and Russians used steroids as far back as the 70's. There is documented evidence and several have come forward to admit it. This was to establish Communist superiority over the West in the eyes of the world.
We know that many sprinters from the US, and indeed many other countries, have tested positive and been banned. There are dozens of cases and admissions. This isn't a surprise, as it's been long known the benefit of steroids and muscle mass to power events. This really increased from 84 onwards, when financial gains were excessive.
But where are the failed drug tests for middle distance guys in the late 70's and early 80's? Where are the admissions, the cover up stories? There haven't been any, is the simple answer.
It is not valid to try and prove guilt of one group of runners by association with various disparate other groups that have little in common with them. Stating that Russian or East German or US sprinters in the mid/late 80's doped, is no evidence at all of an individual (or indeed the whole group of middle distance runners from that era) having doped in a different era, in a different event, in a different country and with no similar positives or admissions by his peers.
