Yeah, I'm no tech guy but SPOTs and/or other tracking devices seem to do a pretty good job already. But even at that, the source of the disbelief in this case isn't really about the lack of technology, it's about the observations and stories from others who encountered her along the way.

It's a f*cking pathetic article! The writer leaves out the hard evidence that exists that she was dropped off 45 or 50 miles down the track. People have analyzed her claims very thoroughly and found that, if her new claim of being dropped off in the same place is truthful (it's not, according to testimony from the person who dropped her off, who has nothing to gain from lying), she would have had to cover the next 50 mile segment at close to American record (for a road 50 miler) and would thereafter continue on to cover more than 100 miles in a 24 hour period. No chance! The most mileage ever covered in a day by anyone on that trail is less than 100 miles. Also, the author says that she can still qualify for the unsupported record, even though she admits to hitch-hiking. Nobody on the hiking forum agrees with that criteria. The last record holder didn't accept any rides. There's plenty of other evidence against her, but the missing 50 mile segment is ironclad proof that she cheated.

The author casts her as a sympathetic victim of sexual assault and makes it seem like a 50/50 proposition as to whether she did what she is claiming. There is no mention of her criminal record or her completely irresponsible behavior when it comes to being a mother and role model for her kid or not being there to care for her dying relative. She recently lost one dog and abandoned the other with her mother. She is a selfish, narcissistic, lying fraud. Even her own mother won't defend her.

There is exactly zero chance that she completed the full course. I would wager a million to one odds on that statement.

Piss poor writing by Outside Online. No mention of the spreadsheet on whiteblaze that shows ridiculous mileages she would've had to cover, all while allegedly self-supported. No mention of the zero day when she boozed and cigged it up. No mention that her own mom discredited her online. No mention of her own criminal record or that she abandoned her kid while pursuing all this hiking.

Also no mention that Kaiha claims to have broken Anish's self-supported record by 9 days, and Metzler's was supported by others while Kaiha's allegedly wasn't. Huge difference that's ludicrous. She basically is claiming to have broken every AT record out there, both genders and whether supported or self-supported. Nice job, Outside.

You failed to mention the acid-dropping part of the story, but otherwise hit all the high points ;)

Outside writers read and sometimes cites letsrun. It will be interesting if they see their article discussed here, especially since there is no comment section for that article.

I got a good chuckle out of this:

I agree. The fact that her ludicrous claims are affecting other people, namely Karl Meltzer, and the lack of disrespect she has shown the hiking community is enough to not let her get off the hook. On White blaze they seem to be more forgiving and are still giving her the benefit of the doubt. I think even if her original intention wasn't malicious, her complete lack of disregard for anybody else and her unwillingness to consider how she is effecting other people is just as bad. It is nothing short of evil.

Her mental "disorder" or however you want to define her having a screw lose is no excuse. Until she fesses up and admits her lies and deceit I see no reason to let her off the hook. My $.02

It's a different mentality with hikers, especially thru-hikers. The community of hikers is more interdependent, communal, sharing, and less competitive because it's not usually a competition and inevitably you end up dependent on others for help from time to time. There's a natural tendency to not be critical and just let everyone be themselves and overlook wrong doing and be more forgiving.

Runners, especially those towards the front of the pack, tend to be more independent and highly competitive and are less likely to put up with the kind of crap Kaiha are spewing.

She certainly shouldn't be let off the hook. It's pretty clear that she was using this as a money making scheme and thought that she could sucker people into filling her PayPal account. The idea that simply being in the military makes her capable of beating trail pros that specialize in covering that type of terrain is laughable.

What would be a similar feat to hold her to, as proof that she is incapable of achieving this FKT? I fear that if she is able to actually get another AT attempt supported, that she will fake an injury and make off with any money and equipment that has been put toward it.

A shorter hike, of comparable difficulty, would be much harder to pull out of. Based on what we know of her, what would be the best upcoming option?
