What a ripoff. Cheptegei had no intention of ever going for the record, he stood off the pace from the very start. Giddy wasn't ever going to be in shape for a 5k world record considering she was training for the hour record.
All just a hyped up money grab by the usatf and Nike, that'll be the last sub I ever give them
Seems like Shannon Rowbury is doing an okay job as commentator.
Hopefully she didn't misgender anyone like that time kara goucher called that non-binary competing in the womens race a woman. How offensive and racist.
Question: Will tomorrows 5k be faster than todays "world record attempt"???
My guess is yes, by 3-5 seconds.
Supposed to be raining with 12+ mph winds. So for that reason probably a little slower. Its a shame, wish they would have blown this time out of the water to show the stupidity of separate races.
Alright, I’mma be honest here: The second half of the Friday Night was disappointing besides Niyonsaba. The 10,000m races were quite entertaining in my books. The most disappointing part was the 5k WR attempts. About 18 and 23 seconds off respectively. I would consider 13 dollars pretty expensive for this kind of stuff but we still have the other part to go tomorrow. Colin and Jacob will be there so I am pumped about that. I would make sure I am confident I am in WR shape before attempting these personally.
Time for Gidey to quit the track and head to the roads for good. If she’s lucky and as good as we think, she will be the female Kipchoge soon enough. Despite her world records, do not compare her to Hassan. Gidey will never be a track champion, that’s not her thing. There is no shame in it….
You are not very wise . She is the world record holder .
Gidey will never be the best track racer at any distance. She may have the wrs, but she is a hobby jogger when it comes to racing. I do not know what is happening to Hassan right now, but top Gidey will never ever beat top Hassan in an actual race. Gidey will be known as the fastest loser ever. Maybe on the roads she will be able to turn the tables, maybe...

Hate to be this guy…but how much dope was Cheptegei on in 2020?
Also what a farce. There should never have been two separate 5k races.
This ain’t it…He won 5k gold in very impressive fashion last year. He just hypes up WR attempts stupidly when he’s 2 months away from top shape.

I tend to think he’ll be in, as Grant Fisher says, better time trial shape than championship shape. The second race has guys who can kick like crazy/shift speeds, don’t think we’ll be missing out on much with Cheptegei not being capable of dropping a sub-56 last lap yet.
…
So now you’ve come around to thinking they’re one and the same? Fair enough, that’s probably largely true.
I’m not saying he’s a scrub, or not a serious contender to win more championship golds, or that his Olympic 5k gold wasn’t a great performance. But 12:35 (in warm, humid weather no less) and 26:11, looking like a machine, are so far out there that no, I don’t think he’s displayed close to that same form since 2020. And given what we know about our sport, or any endurance sport, it’s reasonable to be highly suspicious of his incredible 2020 results.

Hassan will always finish behind Gidey. Hassan and her flappy arm are why Hassan will never beat Gidey’s world record. Hassan too slow.

Yeah. Cheptegei won gold, but Ahmed was closing like a freight train. Ahmed got his positioning all wrong in the last 800. If he'd been right on Cheptegei at the bell I think he could have taken him.
And then no disrespect to either of those two, you'd have to think off of Florence/ETH trials/the Tokyo 10,000 that both Barega and Jakob would have taken them both if they were in that race. Bottom line, Cheptegei did not look like the best 5,000 runner in the world in 2021.

Gotta say, was really nice of USATF tv to post the whole event for free like an hour after it went off the air for those of us across the pond. Epic 10k finishes for breakfast. 🥞
