LSU past and present mafia placing people in those positions. I have witnessed and listened to its workings the past summers in coaching education dining halls and classrooms.

I know that this discussion has been mostly about D1 schools but it was announced at the school I attend (D3) that Felix Moreno has accepted the position of head coach.

Look... in a couple of years it ain't gonna matter. With the power five conferences making their own rules, they will take the money from non revenue sports and give the money to the stud basketball and football players. Women's basketball will get the table scraps left over.

Who the heck is this Joe Lynn whose name is listed next to the Southern Illinois Carbondale X-C Vacancy? I have been told by an authoritative source in the SIUC athletic department that a replacement for Matt Sparks has already been selected as their student-athletes reported to school last Thurs... but no public announcement yet. Is Lynn the replacement? If so, who is he? Also, still no announcement about SIUC's Sparks being definitely hired as ND X-C coach. Have I missed it somewhere? This is one of the most curious and mysterious hires in my recent memory. Sparks has had a solid record at SIUC in his 12 years there.... but only 2 individual male All-Americans... and could never get their X-C team out of regionals by beating OSU, OU, and Minn. But, he did well in the MVC Conference... which admittedly is a mid-major D1 conference... and not a X-C powerhouse. Not sure how many full rides he had to work with either as field event coach is director...and he could not seem to compete with other top D1 Midwestern powers for the best talent in Illinois. His most decorated distance runner, Jeff Schirmer , was a true "sleeper" from a high school very near me. Jeff did not run X-C early on in H.S. and bloomed late and under the radar of many other serious coaches.

There is definitely something curious about the lack of announcement, but nothing curious or mysterious about the hire. Both IU guys that worked together at SIU. All about who you know.

Sorry, may have misworded my earlier posting. I didn't mean to say that Matt Sparks credentials to get the job at ND was "curious and mysterious"... but simply that it is taking so long for any official announcement to be made... by either ND or SIUC...2-3 wks! Yes, Sparks and Turner were both co-assistants at SIUC for 4-5 years... and there is an obvious comfort level there... even if Sparks is not really a high profile nationally known distance coach or prior athlete. I explained why some have questioned the hire... but I also defended Sparks just a bit. In the end, only his performance over the first 3 years at ND will tell the tale. I wish him well. Ok, Illinois Info, how accurate is your report on Dave Beachum to be hired by SIUC to replace Sparks...and can you tell us anything about him? Thanks.

Joe Lynn was the distance coach at Mizzou. Going to Hillsdale (DII school in Michigan - not "Hinsdale.").

Matt Sparks will do fine at Notre Dame.

Dave Beauchem spent 15 years at Bradley and 4 at Western Illinois. He is also a Southern Illinois alum. Joe Lynn has coached at Grand Valley and most recently at Mizzou.

You do realize ND is in the middle of an academic fraud investigation at the moment. Somethings are a little bigger then naming a cross country coach. In fact come to think of it a cross country coach may be the furthest thing from the universities mind at this point.
