Independent witness actually are generally paid for their time. In fact, Guinness even provides this service. It wouldn't be out disallowed for the sponsor to hire witnesses.

Independent means that the witness has no familial connection to the person applying for the record.

Also, watching her in the video, her running form sucks. Her fists are clenched and her arms are raised up too high. She wastes lots of energy for an endurance runner.

When all else fails, cite her poor form? How many treadmill miles did you do last week?

I merely stated that she has poor form. I don't really have an opinion on whether or not she ran the distance. I could care less about that. She could be more efficient. After watching the video I can't understand how they couldn't have gotten sufficient witness verification. It doesn't need to be the same witness for the entire time. There just needs to be witnesses. The video says the event was live streamed. If they have video of the entire time she was running then that would be pretty hard evidence.

I know for a fact that people do get running records from Guinness accepted without paying the expedite fee. I know some people that paid the fee and had their record attempt rejected by Guinness.

And, since you asked, I ran 26.5 miles on the treadmill on Sunday, July 30th.

An independent witness is an individual who is neither affiliated with nor related to the individual or group attempting the record, the record organisers, participants, venue, or any persons involved with staging the event, nor should these individuals have anything to gain from the outcome of the attempt. The witnesses must also be independent of one another, except in those cases where officials from a specific professional body are required to verify the record, e.g. a national sporting organisation.

Seems unlikely a sponsor could be "independent" by this definition.

The sponsor could and should have hired an auditing firm. This is allowed per Page 8 of the Guinness Evidence document.

Audit company or professional services firm – This is a company contracted by the record

organisers to independently verify the outcome of the record and the following of the guidelines.

Please note that this is a requirement for all mass participation records of greater than 5,000

participants.
