For my part, I never said he'd "grow out of it". I have said and believe 110% he needs to be punished and, if a professional so determines, counseling or whatever. I'm not saying "aww, he's just a kid" at all, but saying he's young and teens do some very foolish things, so we work to rehabilitate instead of just consign them to never being useful in society and making ironic jokes.

That's what people who actually work with youth do: we better them no matter the challenges.

Not defending bullying, but are y'all even sports fans? He competed in public sporting events. High school athletes get discussed all the time. We're not talking about his personal life, we're talking about what he did in public sporting events.

I've listened to people publicly berating my kid for dropping a touchdown pass. It hurt and I thought those people need to grow up and realize it's just a game, but I didn't accuse them of abusing a minor.

I've seen a sportswriter make death threats against a 17 year old basketball star for signing with an out-of-state school. I think that is despicable and borderline criminal. That's worse than observing that a cheater cheated.

It's not like it's unprecedented to talk about a high school athlete.

I see it both ways: I'm a journalist as well as a coach in and in general, coaches, teachers, police, and other authorities as well as journalists avoid mentioning kids in trouble—minors that is—by name in most cases. Deadspin in their article on him avoid mentioning him by his actual name, you'll notice.

However, social media and things like Let's Run are a bit different, and without people mentioning him by name, MileSplit would not have been able to do the detective work to reveal his cheating. I don't think discussing the case as responsible adults is wrong, but making comments to the tune of "he'll never amount to anything, once a cheater, always a cheater!" is unfair and immature. As to the sportswriter who made threats of any sort against a high school athlete, no matter how jokingly, I see that as horrible wrong and unprofessional.

The average high schooler turns 18 during their senior year. If he isn't already 18, he will likely be 18 soon. I ran my final two HS track seasons (indoor and outdoor senior year) as an 18 year old.

There is also the fact that he switched schools, which can sometimes require a student to repeat a school year.

I 100% agree with you. I'm obsessed with seeing Holmes go to Prison. A worker making minimum wage at McDonalds steals $10 to feed her baby and she's canned. Holmes commits fraud to the scope of billions of dollars on somehing that impacts people's health and still is the CEO.

He is not a minor. While he has lied about his age in some places to appear to be 22, he said he was 18 last indoor season for age group meets, and there isn't any evidence he is any younger than that. If you're going to age cheat at a youth meet, you're going to go younger, not older.

He did get busted at the second meet at the Armory last year, when he tried to pull the same thing in the 800 and someone noticed. I wish someone had video of the 1600 at that second meet because I'm very curious who actually ran that race...

This isn't a naughty 8yo kid running track and hating it because Daddy makes him. This is a young adult who has spent quite a bit of time and energy spinning a web of lies.

A mistake is associated with some accidental slip, momentary error in judgement etc. He has purposely gone out of his way and cheated multiple times, has had "success" doing so, been caught doing so, yet continues to do so. Nothing about this is accidental or mistaken. It's purposeful.

18 is not a child and is some countries an 18 year old is considered an adult (including some provinces in Canada). In different states a 16 year old who commits a serious crime is automatically tried as an adult.

I have no idea how it is "bullying" to call out someone for cheating? What's the alternative? If a person cheats we can't say anything?

Nobody is forcing this 18 year old to enter races - in fact he is doing so unattached. These races have a public audience and the results are public. He himself publishes his results on social media. If he doesn't want people to comment on his cheating, the solution is pretty simple - don't enter races and cheat.

I don't get it. I had a friend on my hs cross country team, decent, 10:06 3200, who ran a marathon in hs in 4:15. Just to say you ran one and finished it is a huge accomplishment. About 10 years later, I saw him, we talked about running, I was training to attempt a sub 3 marathon. He immediately recalls his marathon that he did in 3:15. I was always pretty ocd about not only my times but other runners also, so I figured, okay it's been 10 years, maybe he forgot. Then details of the race start, like how he went out too fast in the first half in 1:15. I'm thinking, you couldn't run a half in 1:15, let alone, first part of a full, then how he blew up in the second half, and lost his chance at a sub 3. I just shook my head. I'm like dude, our running club ran a water stop, you ran the entire race with a girl on our hs team. Your teammates were all there. I just couldn't understand the embellished story, especially in front of me of all people.

Professionals can not fix sociopaths or borderlines.

And if not in high school, how the dickens—even as unattached—did he succeed in entering NXN Regionals?

If he's out of HS and over 18, seems we also have the situation of fraud in entering a contest for HS athletes while being beyond that point. If we have college-aged people entering anything aside from the open 5K that NXN offers, there's another serious problem at hand.
