Rocky Mountain girls team has a strong top 3, but their 4&5 need work if they want to win state and make NXN again

Driscoll tomorrow! Any guesses for top 5 individuals and the team winners?

VanDahlen (Mtn View), Donahue (Cen10), Hugaboom (Boise), Pelham (Eagle), Bruce (Boise)

Boise, Eagle, Mtn View

Pelham is a wild one to throw in there, but I like it! I’d lean toward Peterson or Culpepper for Eagle’s number 1, but if it’s Pelham, awesome!

Orme, Spiess, Timberline’s duo, one of those Mt View girls that were freshman last year.

Looks like they didn’t have Carlson (she was on their NXN squad last year) that could help in their top 4, will need to get their 5th a little closer though.

I think it's wild that three names have been thrown out for Eagle's 1, and none of them are the guy that ran 9:33 last spring. Taggart seems just sort of forgotten on basically every comment about Eagle. Referencing a page ago, their order went Petersen, Porter, Taggart, Culpepper, and then Pelham at their time trial and Porter went 9:50 or 9:51, so it seems like he is back. It will be interesting to see how that shakes out for Eagle.

If Eagle's 1 mixes it up with the top guys, I think Eagle wins because I think that means all of their top 5 guys are fairly high up. If they are back around 10th, Boise will win and Eagle might lose to Mountain View.

Centennial for 4th, Timberline for 5th.

No way Eagle girls beat Mountain View if Reeder isn't in that top group or loses to the two Mountain View girls. Powell, Reeder, and Herd are all big names missing from there, plus the Owyhee girls that ran pretty well in track. Really, outside of the Rocky girls, all of the big individual names and teas are at this meet.

My order goes Boise, Timberline, Mountain View, Eagle, Capital, Centennial, Owyhee.

I'm trying to figure out who raced in the varsity section for Rocky as the depth on JV was surprising. It looks like 10 ran on the girls side so I'm guessing they could run 10 on the guys side, too.

Tuft, Maybury, Kurtz, Davis, Loscher, Bennion, Bailey, Miller, and Clark is what I have so far. I was thinking Anson but it doesn't appear that he is on their roster anymore.

If Majors was Rocky's 10th this year, that means that last year's 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 ran 17:22, 17:26, 17:31, 17:34, and 17:48 versus 17:45, 17:47, 17:53, 17:55, and 18:04.

Varsity boys results are up. Rocky with a 1-5 sweep, and they put 7 in the top 8

I don't really know what to make of the sweeps, though. Rocky 2024 was faster at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 12, 13, 14. The only position they were faster at this year than last year was 9th, and it was by 5 seconds, and it's not like the other positions were close, either.

The Rocky girls actually ran pretty fast, especially compared to last year, so it's not like the course was running super slow that day, plus 60% of the top 25 in the boys varsity had outright personal bests.

Turns out Boise is really good. Eagle looked meh. Mountain View’s depth issues were not overstated. Centennial is a surprise.

Big missing names were Howie Huffman, James Anderson, Alden Chamberlain.

I would say the tiers are:

CDA

Boise/Rocky/Maybe Eagle if they put it together

Eagle (based on today)/Centennial/ Highland/Rigby

I have a hard time seeing Mountain View being relevant with 4 and 5 runners that are that far back.

Thoughts on Centennial specifically Drew Donnahue??

They look good. Drew Donahue has as good of a reason as anyone to think he could win it.

They have a good amount of guys at the front. My concern with them would be that their 4 has missed a lot of time over the years, their 5 has a 4:56 PR, their 6 ran 16:52 last year at the end of the season but doesn’t look like he has run track before and their 7th, 8th and 9th fastest boys have never broken 18. They have a lot of the same issues that Mountain View has, but their 4 and 5 appear to be a lot better than Mountain View’s.

I think that they are firmly in that 5th to 7th best team range.

Curious as to thoughts on their 4th and 3rd Levi hymas has a pr of 16:38 but seems to have regressed in track and xc since sophomore year. And Sawyer Jensen ran 16:15 last year but seems to have skipped track to just do Jav? Thoughts on their number 2 too?

What are you digging for? It’s probably injuries and other interests throughout a high school career just like any other HS. There’s always kids with strange progressions, these aren’t running robots.

Just wanted to see what the general outlook on Centennial and their top 5 is. Never much talk about them, big surprise to me in comparison to other teams. Especially Drew Donnahue although he does have strong accolades behind him in track. Im excited to see the growth and competition between him, Hyrum tuft (now front running for rocky) and Koda vandahlen who has impressive track times. With the addition of Wyatt Carr this year has an exciting line up of front runners and stars.

At this time, no Centennial or Mountain View at all, Eagle has a complete team but no Petersen, Porter, Culpepper or Taggart but does have James Anderson. It doesn’t seem like it will be as good of a meet as it looked like last week.

Nevermind, Mountain View entered kids.

It's a bummer this meet isn't a bigger matchup. There's not going to be a lot of clarity out of the first couple of weeks as Mountain View raced pretty bad at 3-7 at Jimmy Driscoll, and they were missing Chamberlain. Eagle looks like they struggled at the same spots, but at least had most of their guys there.

It looks like Eagle is likely just racing their 5-11, so it will give at least a little bit of an idea of what they have. If they don't race people at Vallivue, Rocky and Eagle will literally not race full squads until Districts. I'm assuming they will be racing a complete squad at the Nampa meet vs. Mountain View as it's the last race before Woodbridge. I'm not a fan of one of the big 4 or 5 in the district just not even really racing the other teams in the district.

Through 2 weeks, here are the top teams for next year based on total team time for top 7 returners- note that these are times for this year only, so times run last year have no bearing on this and missing runners have no bearing either and some teams have two results to other teams 1 or no results. Every team has someone that they can point to that swings time and it's too much work for me to go through and search for everyone's best times and courses like Rose City change the rankings too much.

I feel like this actually a relevant conversation for this year. It shows who has non-senior depth that is more likely to develop over the season. I also think it's super easy to track and another useful data point.
