I know for a fact they are doing interviews. Take that however you want.
HR is most likely requiring interviews. Looking into PFW Combs was Women's Coach of the year for the indoor season. Administration will just want to keep it in house. Anyone can apply but I would say it's his job.
They just let go of half of their faculty and staff. Im assuming the school is going through some budget cuts and is looking for the athletic department to bail them out through recruiting
1) The Worst Choice, keep on Gildea as head with Goetz (architect of the Portland State debacle) on as an assistant
2) The Better Choice, bring in a new candidate
3) The Best Choice: I thought they might bring Art Siemers of CSU/CSM out of retirement since his wife had a higher up job with UTC, but it appears according to her LinkedIn that they've now moved to Milwaukee. So that's a no go.
Didn't they just hire a head coach? I am curious about what happened with the previous Head coach before him...
Hi - MAC Conference Track Coach here and I have been around.
First thing I will say is I know Camodeca, Berdan, and Gray and they are all great people from my interactions with them. Stevenson AD, not so much a great person. He ran off Camodeca when he was winning championships, they got rid of Berdan mid season because he "wouldn't host meets" and needed to recruit 60 athletes in 1 year to keep his job, clearly an unreasonable expectation. When Berdan was let go the kids were not happy, sent a recording of the AD to the conference and the AD looked really bad.
The Gray situation is even more chaotic from what I have heard. She was the only FT coach on staff because Stevenson was on a hiring freeze until about November. She brought on 5-6 volunteer coaches to help and a part time sprints coach (Bernard Williams). Job was finally posted in November/December and applicant pool was not very good, so she asked to hire in the summer, admin blamed her for poor application pool. The conference meet was pulled from Stevenson due to not being suitable to host conference (no power, limited parking, no seating) - yet the reason the previous coach was fired was because he wouldn't host meets! Gray felt like she would be fired because the conference meet got pulled, because she was aware of why Berdan was let go. Sounds like she was also told on her first year that the recruits she brought in was not enough. I looked on the web site and it looks like she has 20+ freshmen. She was informed she needed 40 recruits this season or else she would be let go after her 2nd years.
The most unprofessional thing is the AD hired another HC while Gray was still employed, behind her back. He started the next day and quit 2 days later.
Kids and parents are beyond angry.
If I was a coach I would stay as far away from this job as you can, you will be the 4th coach in 3 years!!

Schools like this just need to give it up and let it go stop trying to be something you’re not.
or ya know what, how about the AD show us his recruiting chops and how many athletes( non-athletic athletes) he can bring in in one year?
if you can’t have a team for the right reasons then you need to just not have a damn team I’m sorry but it’s not fair to coaches to have to go through this abuse
