And no if you knew your fact you'd notice that EVERYONE on the west coast is really hustling. All those random mid majors are not push overs like they were when Drenth was there.

Side note credit due to Drenth. That guy is amazing. But it is not the same recruiting battle as it was ten years ago.

This thread is 25% job openings and fillings and 75% talking about how bad the hires are. It doesnt matter if you think they were a bad hire. They are hired so complaining on letsrun wont do anything. Can we please talk about more openings, otherwise shut the thread down

Getting up is a way of life in Phoenix. You just do it. Are kids soft nowadays? Dedicated athletes don't complain.

His first year in with people he didn't recruit, and then they haven't been back since? So you're saying they've gotten worse? Not impressed. 18 scholarships for women, so that's no excuse that Arizona "is putting more into distance"- plenty of money to put together a solid women's XC team. Walt got kids from all over the country to come to ASU, not just the West coast.

Ask a dedicated elite level coach if they truly feel their top "dedicated athletes are getting to bed BEFORE 10pm every night.....

Then ask if they believe sleep is important for recovery. The good ones know how vital it is. The good athletes do to and there just simply aren't enough hours to accomplish all your homework, papers, group projects etc before 10 pm. 8hrs minimum sleep while training at the top level is mandatory.

I don't even allow my athletes to take an 8am class. This has nothing to do with work ethic but everything to do with the fact that you have a built in safety net that will allow for an occasional unavoidable late night without brutal recovery reprocussions.

For this reason alone ASU will struggle the majority of the time. Occasionally someone comes along that is bionic and recovers very quickly and isn't effected, but it's rare.

It has nothing to do with kids being soft. Kids just would rather sleep until 8 and then get up and do a morning run before they 3:00 p.m. practice.

Since your so dissipointed in Ryan you should be happy that he's out of the PAC-10 now and ASU can get back to nationals but you just appear like a vindictive a-hole. By your admission when the team makes it back this year it will be Ryan's doing since he recruited the kids. Ryan has had to work with the limited money Kraft gives to distance and limited recruiting budget. They were still burning off the distance scholarships of kids before he became coach. He was starting to get the $ to put together a competitive team that he recruited. Do you not get a full cycle of kids to prove yourself? Should the transition between coaches be seamless? Does coaching a national champion count for anything? Is a transition to a new coach seamless for the athletes?

How can you say that ASU should be better then UofA when UofA puts more money into distance? Should ASU be on par with CU or OK state in cross? If you say yes you are blinded by a few anomalies that have been extremely competitive in random years.

So why are you so not impressed? I can only conclude that you were passed over for the job or are a disgruntled ASU employee/former employee.

This is almost right on. Kids actually are soft but that had nothing to do with Ryan being a great coach or not. Anyone who's involved with this sport can see what a good program he was putting together. There are ups and downs in college xc and ASU was on the verge of getting out of a very short slump. You can't say that becaus AZ and Oregon were better than ASu that Ryan did a poor job. That is just incredibly stupid. Oregon has mega money and reputation behind them and Arizona was the number 1 team in the country. It just makes me sick to see a negative loser like Not Impressed put down a great person/coach like Ryan with such ignorant claims.

You've got to be kidding with this statement. The combined operating budget at ASU is $680,602 taken from Equity in Athletics ($334,916 for the women's team alone). The recruiting expenses for all the women's teams is $261,271. If he was only working with 2 scholarships, Ok, that would definitely be a limited number of scholarship. But with 18 scholarships for women, there's no way the head coach is short changing him that much.

If Arizona is putting so much more into distance, why did they suck for so long until recently? Why was ASU better? The only thing that's changed is who's was at the helm at both places.

Because ASU was once dynamite, Arizona was at the bottom of the PAC (really terrible), and now it's the reverse. It's shocking. I'm not even a coach (just a fan) and calling a spade a spade.

Recruiting: 90% of recruits you have to fly in. That takes a lot of money real quick. Budget goes quick Since you're not even a college coach you would understand. Reason why AZ is doing better now is simply because they got off their asses. Like I said before with many other west coast teams.

I have friends who are D1 college coaches- I know the sort of money it takes to bring in athletes from all over the country. ASU has one of the larger operating and recruiting budgets I've seen for a major conference school. You're welcome to look this info up on Equity in Athletics. You're the one making stuff up if you think ASU is "limited" by money, cause that's bull.

Why did ASU even get on their @sses, as you implied? They were off their @sses 7+ yrs ago. You're the one making up excuses their their demise. I think it squarely lies with the leadership, who's not getting it done like they once did.

Again, I am not a coach or have any interest in being a coach. Just someone who follows the sport, the PAC, and has friends who coach at that level.

I didn't say asu was off their asses. I said UofA finally got off their ass and that's why they had the turn of events from being at the bottom to one of the west coast and national powers.

My point falls with the fact that everyone has really gotten off their asses. Recruiting over the last 5 years has changed dramatically due to the internet. It's so much faster. It's a new game. Recruiting and success compared now and pre 2005 are completely different.

Everyone knows about equity in athletics. It doesn't tell you how the money is split up. You're not a coach, you have. I clue what you're talking about. Go coach at a d 1 elite program and then talk.

As for Ryan Cole. Negative and dishonest recruiter. That is not an arguable fact. Is he alone in that approach? Will it fly at the Academy? Time will tell.

When it's all said and done if Louie was getting it done on both the men's and woman's side they would not have split the program and given control to Ryan. I can't speak to the budget but I do know that ASU struggles bringing in tons of football money and the athletes do fundraise for track. Guarantee the the only fundraising at Oregon, OK State, and others is a call by the head coach (Vin to Bowerman) or (Dave Smith to T Boone). While not poor let's not make ASU to be like most football power schools.

As for Ryan's recruiting style he probably isn't doing anything other coaches aren't. If he was he would have been canned.
