Team staying intact.Recruits are going nowhere.it is such a complicated process to get in-even for strong recruits. Announcement this week but not sure when.milt was great recruiter and coach but it seems hard to believe that Stanford needs to scramble for a quality coach. Trust the process.

Stanford is having a hard time attracking a high quality or big name coach because those types of coaches do not want to work with athletes who are burnt out from pulling all-nighters to study for their exams.
Not to mention high cost of living and unrealistic expectations from admin.
Not for nothing, but these student athletes have to have pretty good time management skills to be admitted and it’s not as if Stanford just became an academically difficult school. The runners are VERY well supported, both physically and mentally.

Nick would be great at Kent as they will be soon posting for Horizontal Jumps, Women's HJ and Women's combined. No idea if he would be inclined to leave California, but I think he'd be a great fit.

You'd think. But push comes to shove, these kids prioritize academics/their actual career every single time (Has anyone heard of a current Stanford athlete transferring to UNC yet?). Which sure, you can argue they should (that's our official line as coaches right?)...but that's something NAU, Colorado, Syracuse, BYU and Oregon (not to mention MOST other elite programs) athletes aren't doing/don't have to do to near the degree...and you're naive if you don't think that includes several all-nighters, healthy nutritional sacrifices and occasional substance abuse to deal with the stress/pressure...which arguably negatively impacts an elite distance athlete more than your average elite athlete.
Now, there are obviously student-athletes who can balance all of this & still remain very successful with all of the support you mention (as there are student-athletes that prioritize academics over running at other elite programs)...but in general, those are the exception. Not everyone is going to jump at the chance to give up a relatively comfortable situation (or at least one they have "down") to be regularly blamed for the failure of "America's next prodigy." And contrary to some belief on here, Stanford cannot get anyone in they want...ask Edrick, that's a major reason he cited when leaving.
And this is coming from someone who has to directly compete against Stanford...they drive me crazy, but I still have to respect what that situation is and the good job everyone over there has done. And as much as we all like to hate on Vin, it makes what he did there all the more impressive in retrospect.
He got 2 kids and a wife. If he wants to stay in the profession, he doesn’t get a choice if he wants to stay in Cali.
Honestly, this is probably a hot take, but being a coach in the division one level on the west coast, this is what Stanford should do in my opinion if they want to have success......
Hire Jessica Riden as the the director of the program.
She's very intelligent and an ass kicker. She isn't a coach, but she is a director. She is a leader. She will hire the best coaches and manage the overall program better than most coaches would.
If Stanford was smart, that is the move they would make. I want to see another coach get the job and move into that position to mix up the coaching ranks selfishly and possibly destabilize some programs I compete against......but the reality is, that is the smartest route provided Jess could hire great coaches to coach the athletes, which I think she could. I would want to work for her, but I'm not really viewed as a great coach. Sure there are names who would though.
Jess is great, and that model might work, but they would then be forced to hire “head coaches” on assistant salaries. The biggest obstacle for Stanford is the aforementioned cost of living/housing. The director position needs to be the lead coach because it is the only position on staff that provides a salary and housing accommodation that make living in PA a possibility if you have a family.
From ops to director! You've lost credibility now. Our sport already has a shortage of countable coaches going after 1-3 NCAA championships a year. Stanford and our sport deserves someone in that position that is a coach AND director. Are you her family member or something? Get lost.
