yes, that world record in the 55-60 age group for the mile is firmly in his sights. I expect to see it before the summer is out and then on to the World Championships in September.

The 356 day of training phase II. I ran up the La Luz trial for 276 minutes way better than last time.I ran up for 130 minutes plus coming down slow for 146 minutes. I had bend down and drinking running water,I was so thirst. You talking about fresh water from the Sandia moutain unlike frigwater. This is great water.
Henry
276 minutes? Wow! Good job!
That reminds me of when I sometimes ran up Pikes Peak in training. I would get so thirsty up there that I'd start looking for running water or snow near the trail.
Henry, I hate to ask, but I'm really curious: What's your weight now? Are you making any progress on that?

I feel lighter, I wonder if I'm 168 or 170 lbs.But I think I will run well in the next mile in Nashville.Unlike the Portland mile.

wow, running non stop for almost 5 hours? Unbelievable. Hard to believe that a 55 year old guy that is 30 lbs overweight could do a workout like that; but, then again, we are talking about 1 in a million....HENRY RONO!! Are you training for an ultra marathon?
the workouts that you are doing now, don't seem to be in line with the title of this thread. I guess you aren't training for the mile this summer, doing workouts like this, still? Maybe the Commrades 50 mile race in South Africa?
just wondering... wrote:

NO! NO! the mile in Nashville on June 2,2007 no kidding.
Yeah,I'm doing it now in this kind of training.

This is how to condition Henry Rono old body no kidding. The elephant body is not the same as the lion body.It requires a heavy duty work. You got it! Do you dig it?
Henry
I completely agree with you, Henry. But you know that you need to get that elephant body to look more like a lion body during the next few months, right?
you can't be serious....5 hour runs for a workout, at this point?

if Henry can't lose weight running for 5 hours like this, then one has to wonder what's going on. It doesn't add up.

I'm working on it now as we speak.By the way you did a good job by putting me in Carlsbad 5000m race,I shocked the world that day.I was the center of the media around the world. The people in Kenya was waken up.Most people thought I was already history and dead.
"I thought you were dead," said one the friend in Spokane,Washington we went WSU together.
I want to do the same in the near future as I did in Carlsbad.
Henry
Advice for Henry: Cut out some of the 200-300 minute runs, and do a combination of shorter runs with more intensity, fartlek, and cross training. The cross training should ideally be a mix of biking and swimming.
Trust me, Henry, by working all areas of the body in cross training the weight will really come off. Even at 168 pouns your are still very far from an optimal weight to run to your potential, whether it be a mile or 5000. Your are carrying a lot of extra baggage.
You have been doing these long runs for months now, and the weight is still not coming off as it should. Lesson learned. Cross train, and diversify your physical activities.
You will not be able to continue all this long slow running without getting injured.
ghost
you are right. there will be no fast mile or a 150 lb Rono if he doesn't move on from these 4 hour runs. It's a little ridiculous at this point.

Wow, what's it been- ten years?
Although I'm willing to listen to your reasons for believing that Henry will lose more weight by running less and swimming and biking more, I really question whether you are correct. I think that biking and running in water can be useful for people who cannot tolerate a lot of running because of excess weight. But that is not Henry's situation. I think that Henry needs to focus on what he is eating and drinking, because he seems to be consuming too many calories. I think that he also needs to recognize that harder or faster training is no substitute for losing weight. From here on, almost all of Henry's improvement must come from weight loss.
