What do the names on the cheques relate to ? Am I being really slow?

I don't get it why the IRS doesn't crackdown on these sham non-profits. It's pretty clear these guys are running a business through the non-profit.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I understood the amounts bit, what I'm less clear on is whether those names relate to actual runners.

Jordan Chipangama and Matt McEelroy are real runners. And Bob Nichols, the other name on the checks, is a real RD threatening to sue them for half the money displayed on those checks.

I have read all the thread from when it first appeared, I looked for those runners names in the results for this race starting with these from page 1

and drew a blank.

there are different distances I think- 10k, 10 mile etc

I see now. Those are the results from the 10k race. The gentleman in the photo raced in the 10 mile race.

This one is but a speck of sand compared to the bigger non-profit shams out there. But, yeah, same model. You sell a charity and keep the profits.

I love how someone tries to spin $18,000 into a year of work. A small race does not take 52 weeks of full time planning.

The verdict is in then, the RD is a total fool and assumes everyone else is too.

Their mission statement is so vague that I can't imagine them being very successful in obtaining grants. They did do an event where Wounded Warriors got some free surf gear and lessons (probably donated by businesses and individuals not out of the "charity's" funds) That must have been at least 4 months of 2 people @60 hours/ week right there! Not to mention the race! They must throw a few 80 hour weeks in there to end up with 60 average? Unless they just push through! Frankly, the vast majority race directors I know are volunteer. B Nichols doesn't qualify as volunteer. He is personally profiting from the race

According to their reporting, the charity took 7500 man-hours to put on the race, buy two floating wheelchairs, arrange for 10 sessions of surf lessons for disabled kids (lessons run by an existing surf camp), and buy a trailer for rescued sea lions.

Is running the only sport that's been taken over by charities and fund-raising? Raising money for charity is great but it seems like every other race is in the name of some charity and is poorly organized, incorrectly measured, or some other debacle like the one that this thread is about. Then when things go wrong, the participants are expected to not complain or voice their concerns because the race is for charity.

I only reported that on the linked tax form they put down that the average week worked was 60 hours and total annual pay was 9000.

For all I know the bulk of their time could be from sitting at the beach watching over a donation box on a card table.

Their revenue for 2014 was 151k, expenses were 83k most of which is listed as those "60 hours/week" salaries and "other expenses". (about 30k of the 83k is alleged to have gone back into the community.)

The "other" expenses look padded- especially over 10k for advertising/promotion, almost 5k "information technology", 3500 for telephone

Of that 151k total revenue for 2014 they added 67k straight into the bank acct.

apologies if my vitriol should not have been directed at you. I would ask then if there is any deliniation as to how many weeks were actually worked. Race week/month? sure, 60hrs/wk is reasonable. the rest of the year? gimme a break. no way in hell.

Either way you slice it, this RD is a joker and a fraudster, as evidenced by the "sly" change to the website, and the ridiculously inappropriate emails to athletes who won their money fair and square.

Do we really think the "treasurer" is working those 60 hour weeks non stop too? B Nichols isn't the only putting in the hours!

Mind you they are also allegedly spending almost 2k per year on accounting (in addition to the treasurer's salary), so I can't imagine Big Bob's treasurer buddy needing to put in that kind of time
