Props to Sara Hall - the only American that surprised me with a good race. Others seemed pretty meh. Tough race at altitude a long way from home....

What are you basing this on? True is a mudder and did very well in Poland, but this was a grass track. Why do you think he would have ran any better than Derrick? I'm a True fan and he's in very good shape based on recent road results, but maybe he had an issue with the altitude in Boulder? (Although by memory I think it was more the heat).

I'm fine with a discretionary spot too and I don't think the criteria need be that True would have been the top American at the race in order to earn one. If you want the best team you can get, then adding True would have very likely helped.

Here's what I think they should do:

Have the trials race. I'll admit, I don't know how many qualify for XC world's. Let's just say it is five. Okay, so if you finish in the top five at the USATF XC Championship, you have punched your ticket to Worlds. Then, as soon as someone gives up their spot (e.g. Ritz), USATF can fill it with an at large spot rather than whoever finished 6th place at the trials race.

Only problem is that USATF screws up everything so badly that I'm sure they would be political/corrupt about this kind of a selection. Perhaps they could have an XC panel and had some kind of objective criteria to fall back on. It can be done, is my point.

Senbere Teferi of Kenya:

PB of 4:04 for 1500. Tilastopaja only lists a 16:21 track 5000, but a road PR of 15:43. 8:41 for 3000. She won bronze in the 1500 at the World Junior Championships in 2012 and also has a silver from 2011. The only result from 2015 listed on Tilastopaja is an 8:46 3000 at Birmingham.

The name 'Muchiri' Kenyan from the Kikuyu tribe (Sammy Wanjiru's tribe). You'd think by now people involved in athletics would understand Kenyan naming customs ( which really aren't as complicated as those in Spain or Russia).

First name: Usually Christian or Muslim or whatever religion.

Middle name: Usually a given tribal name. Could relate to circumstances of your birth, being named after a certain ancestor, even or whatever. Some people opt for this as a first name.

Surname: Usually family/father's name.

I don't understand why so many outlets whine about Kenyans "changing" their names.

I honestly feel that LRC would do a better selection process than USATF.

And I think LRC is a cesspool so that's really saying something about USATF.

Let depth get them to the tie. But no way should it break the tie. Half your team in the top 2, that is just too good a result not to be the tie-break.

The scoring is a major reason XC is so boring and anticlimactic. It's a good participation sport for kids, but awful for spectators. Most elites avoid it.
