From Piftzinger and Daniels: Vo2max is the most important determinant of success in events lasting from 3min to 30min...(so basically 1500m to 10km). In marathons and for sure ultras it really tends to mean less and less. For 5km it's golden.
The Vo2max of xc skiers and cyclists can be super high, but can they run a fast marathon? No.
I will tell you guys one more time the important factor here is Running Economy (Lactate Threshold would be second, then maybe Vo2max).
And in relation to Killian running on the flats (or vice versa with a track guy powerhiking up 14ers like on the HR course) it differences in musculature and efficient movement patterns over variable terrain.
