My family floats down the Shenandoah and the Potomac Rivers in a tire every summer. Does that count?!

The Board of Trustees like to hide in the background and make decisions.

I read Gilchrist Sparks III opinion piece on delawareonline. He's suppose to be an attorney, but he didn't convince me.

Good article on why Muir has canceled all meetings with groups. I guess he can't stand the heat. Perhaps he's already packing his bags and getting ready to get out of town.

Good article. With continued lobbying on the part of fellow runners, UD alumni, and current/former XC-TF members it is possible something can be done. Or at least bring enough pressure upon Muir so that other ADs do not get the same idea.

Talk about hypocrites. UD partners with the USOC in a program run by Dr. Matthew Robinson and administered by the Vice Provost called ICECP. It's a program to educate international coaches. Part of the program last year included men's track and field. What are they going to teach them next year? Is Muir going to give them a workshop on how to axe their programs?

I did a little bit of research and I was able to get some information on the Student Life and Athletics Committee on the University of Delaware Board of Trustees. They are the committee responsible for the decisions pertaining to the athletic department on the Board of Trustees. I have listed the members below as well as contact information for six (6) of the eight (8) members. I am still working on getting contact information for John E. Wallace, Jr. and Ruly Carpenter. I will try my best to get their contact information, but it is going to be very difficult.

I would definitely urge you to write letters and emails to those people listed below in order to express your concerns over the University of Delaware's decision to "reclassify" the Men's Cross-Country and Track and Field programs. These are the people we need to get to!

11. Does Title IX mandate decreases in opportunities for male athletes in order to provide increased opportunities for females to participate?

No. Title IX's purpose is to create the same opportunity and quality of treatment for female athletes as is afforded male athletes. The law does not require reductions in opportunities for male athletes.

Some educational institutions have chosen to cut men's non-revenue sports and maintained that this was necessary in order to comply with Title IX, thereby making women's programs the easy scapegoat to blame for the loss of these men's programs. However, it is the school's choice to cut back in this unfortunate manner.

Title IX is not to blame for school priorities that short-change men's minor sports. During the 1980s, when few schools were expanding opportunities for women to play sports, men's minor sports were being eliminated in order to spend more money on football and other men's revenue-producing sports.

Cutting men's sports is not the intent of Title IX. The intent of Title IX is to bring treatment of the disadvantaged gender up to the level of the advantaged group.

The bottom line is that Harker, Sparks and Muir screwed the pooch on this one. They are working off a 20-year old playbook in which they can manage all the information. But this is the internet age. When Sparks is emphatic that this is a federal law and UD must comply with it, he didn't realize that we could read for ourselves. The super lawyer doesn't own the only law books in town. We can read clearly that Title IX is not to be used to cap and eliminate men's teams. So Sparks, Title IX is the law, comply with it, don't eliminate men teams and do what Favia v. Indiana University of Pennsylvania ruled, reallocate funds and add women's teams to comply with the law. If you don't it sure looks like you're just trying to bully and manage us. All the lawyers and administrators in the university can try to spin this, but they can't. You've made a mistake, own up to it, and let's start all over with input from the community. The days of royal edicts are over. You can put an end to this and stop the rift that's embarrassing and ripping the university apart. The whole world is watching.
