I would give Timberline the slight edge to win the State meet in Idaho over Rocky and Boise, so NXN chances would be good since the NW girls are weak again it seems with no teams really at that Top 10-15 level nationally. Would be awesome to send 2 Idaho girls teams this year!
Orchard has taken athletes no one ever heard of to the next level in the Valley. Dash athletes & parents left Dash to go to Orchard because of her results and treatment of her athletes. Fact check. She raised the sprinting bar in Idaho.
I stand by my original statement that this hire was very bad. That meet against Boise sure looks like my point was proven. Ryden and Sallee are two sub 10 freshmen and weren’t competitive. Meridian was a really promising young team. This is a really bad result.
Boise, Centennial, Eagle, Mountain View, and Rocky are without a doubt better than Meridian. That wasn’t up for debate prior to this meet. Timberline definitely looks like they are now. I would probably give Borah the edge. Caldwell has enough up high that they are in the same tier. If Maybury hadn’t left, Owyhee would most likely be better...
Meridian went from a top 5 or 6 team to a bottom 4 or 5 team in a couple of months.
It’s one meet, relax. I agree that it was a better head track hire than head XC hire, but give them time to build their style. Kids have to be willing to trust and buy in as well. First meets are always a mixed bag depending on summer training. I think a handful of those Boise studs are coming off of consistent 50-70 mile weeks so they might just be ahead of schedule compared to the young Meridian studs.
Did we learn anything about the teams that opened up this past Friday? Linking results below if you haven't seen them. (Capital, Centennial, Columbia, Rocky, and Skyview ran a 2 mile at Kleiner Park, while Boise, Kuna, and Meridian ran a 4k at Settler's Park). Both meets were ran with temps in the upper 90s.

The 2 mile is impossible to get a clear picture from since those are relay splits and the distance is very short.
The 4k has a bit more clarity.
I would rate the valley 6A teams as Boise, Rocky, Mt View, Eagle, Timberline, Centennial right now. Rigby looked pretty good at their meet. I might slot them in around Mt View and Eagle right now.
A reminder that last year neither Nampa or Caldwell could field a complete team. Nampa couldn't in 2023. Both years cost the district a qualifying team to the state meet.

I did notice on a reel posted by one of Boise’s media guys (Najera Sports) that Hugaboom and Bruce may have just tempo’d the whole 4K (or at least most of it). They did drop McGee, but with the heat it’s hard to tell whether that’s a sign or not.
I would also think coming off 50-70 weeks would make them not as fresh as the Meridian and Kuna guys for the start of the season no?
What I also found surprising is Howie Huffman being Boise’s #5. He didn’t run a single race over 800m during track, and was in the 17s during last xc season. This could make Boise even deeper.
Sets those teams up well for State since every Idaho State venue is 3.03-3.06 miles. I’ve learned to not trust the gps watches though, the wheel is where it’s at!

Hahaha too true! Almost nothing is actually the correct distance.

Firman is a proven 3.1 miles though. There are spots to cut the course to 3.05 but if you run it legally it’s 3.1.
Even if those courses are short, it doesn’t change the fact that this appears to be a short course. If a bunch of watches are returning the same distance and nothing is approaching an actual 5k, then the course is short. It’s not like it matters much though because everyone is still racing the same course on that day.
If you go by watch gps though Firman is always 3.07-08. I’d imagine that thing has been wheeled accurate though. The course map on Jerome from 2024 and this year look the same, watches from last year look like they got 3.1ish….thats why I don’t trust the gps usually. The beauty of XC is time really doesn’t matter, even when comparing the same course year to year, it has to be done with the understanding that races play out differently which can influence the “times.” But I know it’s fun to compare and speculate.
