In terms of the previous poster about St. Leo, I agree they are transparent.
ROSTER SIZE REQUIREMENTS & STAFFING PROGRESSION: Year 1: Minimum roster of 30 track only student-athletes Year 2: Increase roster size to 60 track only student-athletes Year 3: Expand roster to 80 track only student-athletes Year 4 and beyond: Maintain a competitive roster of min. of 80 track only student-athletes
Seems like an admissions/enrollment job and then you can coach a little XC and T&F on the side. Whew good luck to those who apply but this is becoming more common in our sport.

This is for smaller schools that are hurting for enrollment numbers. Do the best you can, stay on their good side, gain head coach experience and use it as a stepping stone. Get the numbers and have an assistant focus on that along with managing the logistics of outfitting a team that big. Try to have a few studs that can do something at the conference level and build your resume so you can be ready for the next stop.
Even if it's a formality it's good to share. I'm going to apply anyways cause worst case scenario they say no and best case scenario I work at NAU. Pretty much a win win

I think it would be a great thing if we start sharing our experiences with applying for these jobs even if it’s a formality. I do think theirs very skilled coaches out here that may not get the same opportunities as those that have more of an “in” with knowing ppl etc.
It would be good practice for those majority of hard working coaches who will grind and ultimately be successful to know where they can get their start and what places to avoid. If NAU is a program that can’t give those up and coming coaches an opportunity due to their hiring procedures we need to inform those that frequently come to this thread for understanding and hopes of growing as a coach.

I have the same mindset, I was a GA at a good school and then in my 3rd year as an assistant at another good school, and a job like this would be the next step up in my way to being a head coach. So, yeah even if it's a no, taking the time to update a resume and cover letter and maybe even talking to an AD is experience worth getting as a young coach working the way up the ladder in the NCAA. I'll always shoot my shot for something like this.

The most common scenario: you apply, you hear nothing, you might receive an email from HR saying it was filled, and unless you get wind of who the school went with prior, you find out on a message board - in which case you truly never had a shot.
I say apply for the job always. You never know when a new Junior Associate Assistant Co-Athletics Director is going to get WAY too involved and start making decisions for coaches.
I’ve worked in a few athletic departments and you never know who might try to make a name for themselves by hiring an assistant coach. Best case in their mind is their hire will cause dis function then they can fire the Head coach and insert their personal, put it on the resume and get to their next job
