So nothing happened with the pro exterminator. He was coming out every few days and checking the trap. I knew that could only last so long as i'd only paid him so much. I should have just had him teach me how to set the trap and then I'd call him once i caught something.

So fast forward a few months and last week I was looking out the window and saw a racoon walking in my backyard in the middle of the day headed towards the deck. That night, I could tell he was right under the deck as he was making those weird sounds when the dog was walking on top of him. I also heard the same sounds on top of the porch.

So I knew I had at least one, maybe more. So I figured it wasn't too hard to do myself.

I ordered some traps on amazon, went to reddit to find a good bait idea and put one out last night right before Game of Thrones. I didn't want it out during the day as I didn't want squirrels.

I used marshmellows with grape jelly.

Boom.

Less than 12 hours later, I did what the exterminator couldn't do in a 2 weeks. Caught the critter.

My question is though is there a whole family down there?

Yes, they do tend to live in groups.

22lr to the head through the trap, wait for it to die, then bury it in your backyard. Reset the trap. If you catch another, then repeat. If you dont, then get off your butt and seal up the openings to your deck.

As an alternative to shooting it yourself, you can call animal control, who will most likely just kill it for you and then remove it.

I also posted another alternative months ago, which was to find the opening they're using and turning it into a trap door, so they can leave the porch but not get back in. That way if there is a family in there, the adults get stuck outside while foraging and sit there crying for the babies until they eventually come out and the whole family leaves to go live under your neighbors deck instead.

Also, dont get your fingers, dog, child, etc near that trap, some individuals will just cower, but others will suddenly attack.
