I plan to run in compression short sleeve shirt, compression half tights, compression calf sleeves, arm sleeves (sock cut with hole), hat, headband, cheap throwaway fabric gloves.. any other layers I should keep on at race start? I plan to have several layers of throwaway clothes for the wait at the Athletes Village.

Pretty much what I am wearing without the headband. I am flirting with wearing a windbreaker but don’t have any I am willing to throw away and don’t want to be stuck wearing it the whole race.

I’m going with the homemade garbage sack windbreaker for the first few miles. I’ve got about 15 extra bags if you want me to bring you one.

What's wrong with using a garbage bag as a sail? You would be flying with the tailwind and then just collapse the bag in a headwind. And it's not against the rules.
I have a rain poncho but I think I will be using a super light packable windbreaker (I can squeeze it in my running belt) as the Real Feel is going to be 20-25 degrees F despite actual temps of 40-44 degrees F tomorrow on the course between 10 am to 1 pm.
anyone messing with vaseline? i feel like it could be a good idea on areas of exposed skin.

Probably not. Will stick to glide to avoid chafing. Maybe Vaseline on forehead but with a headwind not sure it will help much.
I am going to be using a lot of Body Glide before the race.. but not Vaseline.
I'm going to grease up my dong with Icy-Hot to protect it.

I am actually leaning towards windbreaker as well with half tights and calf sleeves and hat and gloves

Only thing is...there is no tailwind.
That guy would be an idiot to use one in a headwind. But I guess he would be dry. lol

I'm not running, but if it's pouring rain and 40s, I'd definitely be wearing a lightweight windbreaker. I've never been too hot in pouring rain and 40s, even 50s with a long sleeve under windbreaker, even with much more intensity than you'd have in a marathon. Many runners seem to want to freeze their asses off for some reason, but it's not optimal. See all those reports from previous cold years, where they were freezing afterwards. They were probably cooler than ideal while running too.
Contrast that with cycling boards, where I've seen some people say that under 70, they like to keep their knees covered with knickers (3/4 tights). Here, some want to go with split shorts or half tights and calf sleeves, leaving the knees uncovered. Or cross country skiers with full race suits on above freezing.
Good luck, people. Sounds miserable. But I guess it will be memorable!

Keeping this thread alive for future readers. What I’ve learned from a wet, cold and windy Boston:
Pre race:
- extra pair of shoes felt so nice
- change at the very last minute in corral
- hopkinton start village is filled with mud
- have your own water and food so you minimize wasted motion
- bring a disposable pair of gloves too
During race:
- split shorts were fine but
- singlet not so much
- a good windbreaker would have been best
- take gels often as burn too much energy
- I think I took 9 totals, some not entirely downed
- felt that is more efficient than gatorade (spill it all over)
- a visor or waterproof hat is nice
Pacing:
- I did not suffer in the downhills but im quad heavy type of runner
- I surged a bit downhill and took it easy on the uphills
- there really arent many uphills
- miles 11-15 are best taken “relaxed”
- top of mile 21 is the mental finish line
- cruising back down to boston is nice
- still take gels even mile 21-22 (I did at 24 for the taste!)
- mental math is hard but the 1 mile to go at 25.2 is quite handy
- forerunner 935 measured 26.38 which is much closer to most city marathons. Only 1% above

No, but I should have. Anyone who says 2015 or 2016 was tougher or slower is nuts.

I threw away my throwaway windbreaker at mile 6 and immediately:
- felt frigid
- slowed 5 second/mi
- dropped HR a bit and almost never got it back up above 160.
Today light windbreaker was the right choice. So was waterproof cap. Glad I kept it until mile 25!
