It will be very interesting to see Sage's report of what happened. He seemingly started out conservatively and just sort of bonked. Looking at his training over the last few weeks he did taper pretty conservatively, though I suppose it is possible he was nevertheless over-trained. The 100 mile distance is such a an outlier in the sport, it's hard to know what the best practices are in terms of training for it.
He was overtrained at Speedgoat, running a much slower time that he had in the past. It might have seemed like he had tapered conservatively to you and him after that, but I thought he really needed to shut things down then and regroup. I'm saying that as someone who once had 2 years of chronic fatigue or overtraining syndrome.
