According to this thread, Jose Luis Gonzalez in 1987 Euro cup beat Cram narrowly in 3:49 with a last lap of 49.9/50.0 with Cram just a couple tenths back, while Ryun was 50.6 (or 49 by one observer) in the 3:38 and also 50.6 at altitude in 1968 in Lake Tahoe in 3:49, plus Bashir and Cacho were about 50.6 in 1992.

I may have missed this in another thread, but what about that workout that Masback said Matthew did? If I remember correctly, it was 8 x 400 in 51 or better with the last one in 49! Even with pretty long rests, that sounds brutal and maybe impossible.

BB and Centro seem to get along but no way on Earth was Ben "sacrificing" anything in this race. Centro matched every move made on him and by the time the "movers" got serious, Centro was flying.
The official last 400 was 50.5, last 600 was 1:17.9. That 600 is worth 47.1 for 400 equivalence on the IAAF tables, and I am sure it is a PR for Matthew.

Centro is the only guy who actually ran 1500m. The silver and bronze medalists both ran the last lap in the same time as Centro btw. That little bit they had to move around during the race proved to be difference across the line. Today's guys aren't as speed sharp as some of the old-timers even if their conditioning is far and away superior.
Don't think any high schooler has run a 3:50.0 with a 50 last lap.

That was a lifetime highlight for me as a track fan.
The 1500 m is my favorite event and ever since I started following the sport in 1984 I saw an American hadn't won the Olympic 1500 since 1908.
I thought Webb might end it 100 years later in 2008.
The Manzano Silver in 2012 was a real nice surprise.
I actually watched this race giving Centro a shot to win based the consistent championship finishes he's had, his apparent fitness during the year and the fact that the Kenyans messed up their preparation for the 2012 Olympics and AK gets squirrelly interfering with their athlete's preparations.
He controlled the field from the beginning. He didn't waste any effort pushing the pace while others wasted energy jostling behind him.
He covered every move a left something for the finish.
That was so exciting!

Maybe if he goes back to a speed based approach. Hasn’t produced much under Jerry’s strength based approach. The speed approach under Salazar worked well for him. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

I don't recall any specific accusations about speed, but yes, whatever Salazar's approach was based on, it worked.
