The area surrounding Mexico City. It's farther from the equator than the Rift Valley, but the temperature is comfortable year round, it's at the same altitude and there's plenty of dirt to run on. I'm sure there are a few places in South America that apply, too.

The difference is that the highlanders of East Africa and their ancestors have been part of a year round running camp for the entire history of humanity, which has allowed natural selection develop the talent that exists there today. There's also the existence of greater genetic variety being available in Africa, as only a portion of the original group of humans left Africa to populate the rest of the world, so they've got that going for them, too.

I'll bite. What is the "Japanese lifestyle and training methodology"? As far as I can tell the methodology is to help East Africans make ends meet so they can focus on training.

I don't know if he would have 'smoked' him, but it would be an epic race. Bekele's championships were pretty much all won with 53s at the end of 27:00 races. Jeilan closed in 52.high in a 27:13 race. Hard to say who would win.

Bekele would have known that his countryman had a great kick though, and might have adjusted his strategy to take advantage of the fact that his PR is 40 seconds faster than Jeilan's.

Every world class athlete is genetically advantaged. In distance running many of these are from East Africa. So what?

It's not American dominance. It's 'West African' dominance which trickles into Jamaica, Bahamas etc. Generally, Nigerians, too are strong short distance runners.

As much as I think Kenenissa is the KING, I am afraid I would have agree with you. I don't think KB would have outlasted that kind of kick that closes on a 15+ meter gap on a 53.8 min. sprinting guy.

Don't we as runners and consumers deserve better than this? I paid for the coverage with Universal. Maybe it's not their fault, but holy shit! Won't we some day be able to watch an entire race?? Even if we pay for it???

I've spent thousands of dollars for running shoes over 40 years. @#$&%!! Why can't we watch a whole freakin' race for once?

You've got to love how Paul Dickenson, an accomplished thrower, was lobbying for the video to return to the 10000m, instead of continuing with the discus.

Obviously our government needs to spend billions of dollars to spark creativity and innovation. Then maybe Universal Sports can develop a split screen. Then all those people who want to see a woman long jumper from Latvia chatting with people in the crowd after her competition can watch that while we watch the last 2000m of the 10K.
