13.1 Sticker

I dont have a 13.1 sticker but i want one since my first race ever was last oct and was a 13.1. And i am proud because i never have been athletic. Ive been a runner for 20 years but i'm slow and know that my body doesnt have the capability to make it much more than 13 miles. Im also a wife, a fulltime nurse and mother of 3. I will never have the time for serious training, unless i want to neglect my responsibilities. I worked hard to make it 13.1 miles so yes, I AM PROUD! I also like to advertise that running is my hobby like anybody else advertising their fav sports team, etc.

Saw a "0.0" sticker the other day and gave the guy a thumbs up.

I drive a small SUV with a 13.1 sticker on the back. I'm not into stickers or decals, but it's there.

I fit the LetsRun.com demographic (posited earlier) pretty well: I was a competitive runner in high school who was somewhat less-than-wholeheartedly recruited to run D-II and D-III, and decided to attend a D-I college instead which did not hold walk-on try-outs, and thus ended my competitive running career. I ran 14 and 15 mile training runs in high school for fun. So to complete the stereotype, I thought the 13.1 sticker was really silly (although I was still impressed by the people who actually finished marathons).

My wife did not run in school. She swam (not competitively) and never understood the need to run or swim fast when you could just run for fun. She's more into yoga and hiking. She's run four half-marathons - two before we were together and two in the past year that I ran with her. She's never run faster than 2:20. She probably can, but she hasn't been trying to, and that's really okay.

At 57 my dad decided to take up running. He'd been to all my track meets and worked out at his local gym on a Stairmaster, but his second running phase (after his first in junior high) ended when he slipped on ice and broke his leg back in the 70's. At 59 he ran his first road race: a 5 mile Thanksgiving Turkey Trot and I ran it with him in 50 minutes with negative splits. At 60 he ran his first half marathon in 2:30 on the nose. He's now planning his next two road races and aiming for 45 min for this Thanksgiving's race. For Father's Day I bought him a 13.1 sticker. It was the only thing he said he wanted. I bought one for my wife, too, and they put their stickers on the cars together.

Most of my training runs are at a pace faster than my wife has ever run a 5K. But she's proud of the 13.1 sticker and I'm proud of her. The most fun I've ever had during a half-marathon has been running with my wife and the most proud I have ever been was finishing with my dad. And the sticker makes me think of them.

All of us runners need to chill out a little bit. :-)

Why do people take pride in something they do just for fun or something they don't work really hard at?

I guess I should put a 1 sticker on my car cause I enjoy taking my dogs on a 1 mile walk in the evening with my wife. I don't train for it or anything but maybe I should tell everyone know about it anyway.

These are the same people that put their race results on Facebook, not the times though, so they get all of the 'way to go', 'you're a hero', 'OMG you're so awesome', 'I could never run 13 miles' etc... comments from friends and family.

Oh well.

Dude, I have a 200m sticker on my car. Truth. Yep, I'm a sprinter. Why should distance runners get the cool stickers?

I like making fun of them.

I had to have a 13.3 sticker custom made... just couldn't find one anywhere.

This is exactly right. To all the rest of you, shut up with all your whining about 13.1 stickers. You little b!tches need to get a life.

For the record, Vanity you pompus a#*, running a half is a pretty big accomplishment. Only a very tiny fraction of the world even tries to do it and they should be proud of it. Just because you do more, doesn't mean 13.1 isn't great.

Let's see you do it. God you're rude. I'm proud of my accomplishment. 95% of the people I know can't even run 10k, nice to see you're all so high and mighty.

These posts are really pretentious/judgy. Some folks are proud of a 13.1 accomplishment- for some of us that would be a training run, but for some people it's a big deal. Check yourself

I gotta admit, the stickers sometimes come in handy when you're in unfamiliar territory as roads are being closed - unless the person you're following is also clueless.

Man, you guys pretty much suck. So a guy (or gal) works and sweats and tries and you people slam them for being proud of not eating cheetos and watching re-runs of Judge Judy and getting off their butts and trying to be healthy and do somethign good and running a half or a full? Man you people crap don't stink does it.

Guess I'm not mean enough to cut it as a runner here.

Why brag about being so lazy and out of shape that running a half marathon is a major life accomplishment. This just goes to show how sedentary a lot of people are.

It reminds of comments about one of the mud runs when someone said it was the hardest thing they had ever done in their life. What a soft and easy life they had led.

An ultra runner friend of mine has a 200 Mile sticker on the back of his car...now that is an accomplishment.
