The calendar indeed was stupid. The calendar made it more believable that he did it, not less. And, then his explanation of the calendar was even worse. Without the calendar, this is over.
With respect to you keeping a written calendar, make your own choices, but as anyone who has done document review knows, the less that's written down the better (except for proving compliance with regulations or record of work done leading to an invention).
