Exactly my point. Coe's 1981 season is more impressive in my opinion than any of El Gs seasons. The range of fast times from the 800 to the mile in quick succession is more impressive than rattling off 3:30 1500m races for a man who can run 3:30 easily. He simply got into a rhythm. It would be like saying Bolt running under 9.90 every race is more impressive. It's not.
Nobody has got close to achieving what Coe did in that 1981 season. Also history has shown the difficulty in running 9 races in a championship setting in a few days across the 800/1500 like Coe has done and been successful. Only Makhloufi managed it since I believe.
Most think he's glowing.
If you're going to be critical of Coe, then please, at least get the facts right. He ran 7 races in 9 days, not 9 races. And this is not the same as running a dozen fast times over an entire season. Championship running is as much about tactics and psychology in navigating through the rounds. Yes its's about quick recovery too, but not all the heats are run at or near WR pace.
And while I agree that Coe's 81 season was sublime, his fast races were not in quick succession. There was 4 weeks between his 800 WR and his near miss at 1500m/1000m WR, and another 6 weeks between those and his two 1 mile WRs. Ngeny ran fast times at 1000, 1500, mile and 2000m on average, every week for 3 months.
And please note the look on Coe's face at the end of his 800, 1500 and 1000 fast times! He was clearly leaving it all on the track.
7 races in 9 days is tough across the 800/1500 events and history has shown how tough it is. This is testament to Coe of course but the only man I can think of that's done this successfully in the modern era is Makhloufi and many think he's doping.
If faces are telling then Guerrouj is clean. Guy used to collapse after races and look absolutely spent. Doping doesn't make it easy to run to your maximum. It just raises your ceiling (or perhaps gets you closer to your absolute max than you'd reasonably be able to otherwise, that's debateable). If you run to exhaustion whether that's 3:45 for you or 3:25 then you still are in a world of pain.
