MIAC Track 2017

It was definitely a sit and kick during the 3k at Carleton. The splits of the winner, Jones, was about 3:08, 3:00, and 2:48. The Gusties (Jones, Knobbe, and Dammann) appeared to just sit on James Logan and then drop the hammer. With Jones' last 400 being around a 61 I would say their actual 3K time is not indicative of where they are at right now. Does that mean they are top in the conference for the 3k in an honest race? Knowing Gustavus probably not.

Rumor has it fredrickson ate 7 chocolate chip cookies last night before the meet.

Some say Bugler ran his second mile in a 4:26 to show then Gustavus guys that their drinking habits won't cut it.

Drinking is more fun than track, though.

Two of the MIAC's top runners' alcoholism aside, are we going to get a Bjork, DCG and Fredrickson 800 at conference? Or is the universe not going to align for us?

I'd be surprised to see Lillehaugen beat Klamm, who popped a 48.98 this weekend. Will be interesting to see if Egbujor runs the 4 again at conference this year. 800 field would seem to be comparatively weaker if Jerry runs the Mile, but he might like his chances to make nationals in the 4 better than the 8.

Don't talk about distance runners splits in the 4x4, you're embarrassing yourself. If you want to talk about 4x4s you should talk about Bethel running 3:21. I think we are beginning to see the Rock effect. Also, did Jerry run on Carleton's 4x4 at the Meet of Hearts yesterday? 3:23 is a nice time. The conversion from the 300m track kills Jerry's time a bit, but 4:12.09 should get him in. Kind of crazy that LaMere's 13:54 on a 300m track became a 14:03. I wish the DIII Historian noted which of the all-time performances were on 200m flat versus 300m or 200m banked. It would make Grant and Jake's 3ks from Indoor nationals 2 years ago quite a bit faster.

Is Jovan the favorite in the 5k at this point?

I think we need to make it a six-man race, now. After this weekend, the 800m has become one of the deeper events in the MIAC. *For some reason Bjork isn't on raceberry for his race.

If everyone above runs the race, this will be my event to watch for MIAC. I would hand the win to DCG as he is the returning, and for some reason highly ignored, All-American in the event having finished 4th last year. BUT, I think he will elect to run the mile against Coffey instead, then double with the 1k the next day. So it really is up for grabs. Exciting stuff.

Actually, though. Any distance runner's split in the 4x400m is incredibly irrelevant.

And YES! Finally, someone other than me is talking about Bethel's 400m crew. They are killing it this year. They have been rearranging their personnel and order, but it looks like they might have it down, now. Hopefully an All-American bid for them in the future.

And let's give props to Carleton's 4x4 who is sitting at 17th in the nation. And they two freshman on the team!

As for the distance events this year, please don't even talk to me about "how fast (insert name) closed their race." That means nothing as just about everyone in the conference negative splits their race. The Gustees only had one guy break 9:00 and might not even make the fast section at conference. If they are so in shape to negative split by so much, then why would they just sit on such a slow pace when they all know they need to qualify for the fast heat to do anything? My guess is that they will all convert up and run the 5k and take their chances there.

Same goes for Bugler. 8:45 from a 9:08 steepler is awful, regardless of how "fast he closed." He hasn't run anything substantial or noteworthy all season, albeit he has only run 2 races and has been alone for both. IMO he shouldn't be in any conversation for running anything spectacular.

In regards to the 5k, Jovan is my favorite for now, but it honestly really depends on how pacing duties go at conference. If Jovan is able to go from the gun and press the issue, I think he takes it. He proved that he is in better shape than most of the Oles at the Showcase, but if the pace is slow, any of them can be in the picture. Personally, I would love to see Jovan leave college with at least one MIAC title.

Yesterday's Carleton 4x4 was three freshmen and did not include DCG, he wasn't at that meet.

Was shittyspielberg filming at the UST Showcase? Asking for a friend. Any other pics/video sources? I saw a lot of cameras there.

Seriously, from someone that doesn't go to St. Olaf, thank you. It's fun to see races that we are in or our teammates are in, and you don't overdo the (totally reasonable) focus on Oles. Keep up the great work.

Thanks a bunch. I made race videos all throughout HS, and noticed by the end that just as many if not more runners outside my team watched them as well. People love to watch themselves/others race. Wanted to keep it up/make another channel for my college team too, just because it's really fun, and I enjoy doing it

What is the deal with the announcer at Carleton's home meets? Coming to the meets in a suit and over the top commentary. Does that guy think he is a big deal?

I like it, honestly. It adds a feeling of genuine excitement. He loves track and field and helps the fans get in to it. Would you rather they run in utter silence?

Yeah I'm fine with it. Leave it to Carleton to go a tad past the ordinary. He is good at it too, by which I mean he got my last name right last year.

Much love to John Davis. Good at announcing, gets all the names right, and lord knows I'd rather have someone giving the slow heat of the 600 some excitement by making up a story line rather than just watching the kids duke it out for a 1:36.

While I agree with the fact that Jovan is probably the favorite at 5k on paper, I think there is someone you left out about being in the picture for a slower race.

You have to throw Adam Brandt (UST) in that mix. While 15:19 isn't overly impressive, he came from about 5th or 6th late and kicked down everyone and even beat 5 people from the fast heat. Had he been in the fast heat I believe that he would have ran closer to 15:10. He has potential to be lethal in these tactical races.
