I hope I have this right:
For those who are following the 2016 World Chess Championships, Magnus Carlsen and Sergey Karjakin are tied 6-6 in the 12 game match.
To break the tie, on Weds., Nov. 30, 2016 at 2 pm they go to another match: A four game rapid chess match. Whoever wins this mini-match is the World Champion.
What is rapid chess? Well, the way I understand it, each player will get 15 minutes to make his moves, and he'll get 10 seconds added to his time as he makes each of his moves.
What happens if they're tied after the rapid chess match?
They play up to five 2-game matches of blitz chess.
What is blitz chess?
Each player gets 3 minutes to make his moves, and he'll get two seconds added as he makes each of his moves.
If they are still tied after four rapid games and ten blitz games, an Armageddon game will be used to break the tie.
What is an Armageddon game?
A game guaranteed to produce a result, because Black has draw odds (that is, for Black, a draw is equal to a victory). To compensate, White has more time on the clock. Common times are six minutes for White and five for Black, or five minutes for White and four for Black.
Believe it or not, an Armageddon game has been needed in the past. Let's hope not this time.
I believe that all these matches could potentially be played on Weds., Nov. 30: Rapid, blitz if needed, and Armageddon, if needed.
The closing ceremonies are also on Weds. Nov. 30.
Tomorrow we should have our World Champion.
