Has Nike's NXN ruined Footlocker National?

DyeStat being Nike-backed would love to see Footlocker fall by the wayside.

However, DyeStat is just a big corporate hype machine that is run by adults with 15-year-old mentalities. They know which side their bread is buttered.

Dyestat is owned by Disney via ESPN. They have no Nike backing. Nice try.

How do the Rosa's/Lukas get mention on the front page for winning with unremarkable performances, but Craig Lutz is left out? He ran 14:34 on the freaking FLSouth course. He's faster than Colby Lowe / Reed Connor at this point. And he too is an underclassman, aka a JR.

Dyestat is all part time amateurs, retired high school coaches, volunteers. They sold out cheap to escape debt and are were passed around like a cheap Russian whore in Nazi Germany until ESPN picked up the crumbs.

Too many people getting caught up in nostalgia here. NXN adds an opportunity for HS runners. I have had kids do both and love both experiences. Both events have great competition and give the kids a chance to see how they fare against kids from other states. So ... what's the problem?

With their decades of history, Footlocker has a rich history. While I am not a big Nike fan, I appreciate that they recognized XC is a team sport and a national meet without teams is not true cross country. Adding individuals last year, was inevitable.

Footlocker could have had the vision a decade or more ago and made it a team competition, but they didn't.

Sure, being a Footlocker finalist is not quite what it was since some of the nation's best runners may be on a team or want to run NXN, but qualifying for either is still quite an honor.

Its probably due tot he fac that you get treated a lot better at NXN and you get more quality gear. Plus it is also hard to quailify for NXN making it more of an accomplishmnet to get to the national level.

45 individuals go to NXN only 40 for Footlocker. Only 4 regions for FL and 8 + Cali for NXN.

Footlocker is just a bigger deal. Nobody say "oh man stanford, and Oregon are loaded with NXN finalists.

I can't imagine the few kids who are actually good enough to qualify for footlocker give a crap about gear or how they are treated. they are among the elite high school runners - all they care about is finishing as high as possible.

Footlocker is the Super Bowl of High School Cross Country. So Cal is the place to be. We're here in Costa Mesa now. It's amazing here in the capitol of track. FLW is Saturday up the road. FLW is next Saturday 1 hour down the road. This is the time of our lives. We live for Footlocker. Dudes and dudettes: run your friggin asses off !

I've spoken to maybe 20 qualifiers for each meet over the past 2 years and I'm shocked that this benefit (i.e. good schwag) comes up so often. If you're one of the top runners in the country and are contending for scholarships worth tens of thousands, are you (or your parents?) really so short-sighted as to give a rats behind about $1000 of Nike gear? From what the kids say, apparently (and shockingly) yes!

Maybe Footlocker should pony up an extra $12,000 to provide the kids with some high-quality "National XC Championships" jackets (logoed with something timeless, not edgy) which, unlike their uniform or medal, can be worn with practicality and pride. Get one for Rueben and T. Will and Suzy and Meb to affirm that connection among the generations and you'll find the NXN temptation will diminish as kids run themselves to near-death to get "one of those FTL jackets" that are so exclusive. I don't know, just brainstorming.

Or, you know, just keep doing the same thing every year and watch Nike ruin you.

Yesterday's NXN races were fabulous. This Saturday's Footlocker National will be outstanding. Nothing has "ruined" anything!
