While I don't think that Kimmel's characterization of the shooter was accurate, he should not have been fired or suspended. But frankly, reruns of "I love Lucy" were getting better ratings than his show. If he was making bank for the network, he could say virtually anything and not get fired. Network TV is dying and the bloated salaries of guys like Kimmel are really getting scrutiny.

trump has accurately assessed that 40% of the country will do whatever the boss says, while telling themselves they are sticking up for working folks
40% of those that voted. NOT 40% of the entire U.S. That 40% is closer to 15% overall ... a tiny minority.

and the point on trump is, his base and party are different than the left. i didn't vote for obama the second time because he didn't close gitmo and get out of afghanistan like he promised. setting aside shenanigans, bush v. gore was winnable in part because dems could actually get sick of clinton hijinks (clinton fatigue, it was called), or want the idealism of nader. in 2016, part of hillary's problem was she couldn't make the bernie folks happy, and her DNS folks had actively ratf*cked his wing of the party in the primaries. that's like 25% of the party.
compared to that, there is barely a sliver of trump pushback allowed to exist on the right. say, romney. that's like maybe 5% of republicans. everyone else salutes everything the man says or does, and holds their nose on the ones they dislike.

If we allow the precedent that the first amendment is irrelevant, and the govt can dictate who’s allowed to be on the air and who’s not, you won’t be celebrating when/if the shoe’s on the other foot.
You are correct and we don't have to wait for a Dem to get back in office. We saw it happen 1st hand with Biden's admin repeatedly censoring social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc) not in line with their propaganda and Covid shaming any contrarians. This is bad for all sides.
