A USA Track and Field appeal of the DQ was denied by a jury, meaning Hocker will not be in Wednesday’s final.
“We are disappointed by the decision to disqualify Olympic champion Cole Hocker from the 1500 meter final,” USA Track and Field said in a statement. “We believed we had grounds for an appeal and unfortunately, that appeal was denied.”
Be great to have some better videos so we can all dissect them and come to widely different conclusions depending on our biases.
That said, if you were watching this live, you couldn't miss what Hocker did and immediately think that he was probably going to get a DQ.
I watched it live and was immediately concerned he would get DQed. He was panicking and made a move to sneak through the gap and it looked like the German runner was impeded since he fell back significantly immediately afterwards. After seeing more angles of it and slowed down, I actually think Hocker barely touched him and got through the gap pretty cleanly. Don't think it's DQ worthy. I see much more significant contact that that all the time in 1500m races.

It looked egregious. I saw it and was like - man that German went way back. Will he get DQd? But when the German says it didn't impact him, I'd say pick up the flag. But are we going to then have officials interview athletes after the race to get their take on it? What if they lie?
But in no other sport, do officials go back and look for a reason to DQ a star athlete when no foul was called at the time.
It looked like Hocker thread the needle with slight contact that did not impact Farken's forward momentum since he was already slowing down when Hocker made his move. He turned his shoulders to avoid contact. It's racing and appeared smallest incidental contact. Like Hocker said he shouldn't have given up the lead but hindsight is perfect. Disappointing. They could have advanced both if there was any question.

That was a totally unjustified dq for Hocker. He was exceedingly careful not to push anyone and did not. Nor did Farken think he did. That's not rubbing. That's racing. I've seen far worse not dq'd. That's just your typical 1500.
All I will say is they better be real good at being consistent in apply the rules. Recall the US W 800 championship where one runner bumped another out 3 lanes (Wiley) and there was no DQ. Nor do they call things as tightly on cutting in when in traffic. So, be consistent.
Interesting, 4 downvotes, no upvotes. So those 4 do not want rules applied consistently I guess? I did not say whether this DQ was right or wrong. But I will pay closer attention to how they rules on these things in the future.

In his career he has only had a few major wins and in the olympics it was him salvaging a win from the 2 favorites battling and the rail opening. In the US trials yet again he was barely able to sneak through on the rail. Without an open rail he is just another guy in the race and a non factor.

Picture one of your least favorite 1500 runners doing this and I bet you would feel differently.
These track judges need to start realizing that track and field is a business. There's a reason refs in the nba don't give star players as many technical fouls -- they want to keep them in the game! The same should go for stars in track. Also, there's no chance whatsoever that Farken would've been in the top 6 whether Hocker touched him or not. He was going backwards.

There is incidental, reactive or accidental contact. what Cole did looked intentional like a pass rusher spreading the blockers

What foul do you want called in the moment? A senior citizen waving a yellow flag on the home stretch? It comes afterwards because of how quick everything happens. If Hocker is going to stay on the rail then he needs to truly stay there. By the apologists' rationale, the german was going backwards, well, had Hocker waiting another 10 meters he would have had his miracle gap to work through and be undeservingly applauded. But he panicked!
Its a shame Cole is not in the final, as he clearly is fit enough to contend for the win. If he was in the final I'd be rooting for him to win.
But anyone with a brain watching that live had to know a DQ was coming, or at least suspect it. You cant just push through like that. Filip Ingebrigtsen was out in 2016, Hocker here. It was his own fault getting into such a stupid position.
That said, if Kerr wins I will make sure to enjoy him sounding like a douche when he tries to say it isn't a hollow victory with all rivals (besides Laros) out of the final.

Hocker has made the final of every global championship he has contested and never finished worse than 7th with a 2nd and 1st (Olympics). He made this final by place also. He'd have been on the podium in Paris going on the outside of Ingy.
Exactly. Farken and Nielson were like lapped runners. They were obviously no longer running to win but just to survive. They were slowing dramatically 50m from the finish while everyone else was accelerating. Lapped runners have a duty to get out of the way. If not it is ok to nudge past them.
