    Good result but his aim here was sub-13. He needed to take the lead at 3k and crank it up a little. He knows he's not a fast kicker and he ran so much extra distance by staying in the pack, he ran the race the Ethiopians wanted rather than his race. It was his first international race so I think he'll learn from that and be better next time out. He will definitely go sub-13

    If he had the day he might should have use the same tactic as the Norwegian (Karoline Grøvdal) in the womens 5000. Front run in the middle part to make sure the pace isn't slowing down, and avoid getting slowed down by navigating the pack. Looked like he had lots of energy on that last surge, even though it also seemed like he burned it off quite quick. He will do a lot better at WC.

    I mean Tim and Tefera have beaten him at Monaco, the DL Final and World indoors for Tefera. They didn’t race as much last year as usual. Jakob is great and will make it tough. He goes off as favorite no doubt. Today he looked strong as usual but if Tim’s in 2018/19 form, that’s an extremely close race.

    Jakob's lack of speed can loose him races and might be his greatest obstacle to breaking the WR both in the mile and the 1500.

    Jakob is pretty quick. Fast enough to set WR in 1500 and mile. Great young runner. Today was a glimpse of his upside. He will set records. Already OG gold medalist. A true competitor.

    Agree. Grovdal ran a perfect race for her to get a big PB, that was the race Klecker should have run to get that sub-13. If he could somehow get into Paris on Sunday, I think he'd run smarter and hit his goal.

    I think that's right. Just look at Wightman in that race. He's a guy who closed out a 3:40 race in 51 seconds last year, he's got serious wheels. But he had nothing over the final lap yesterday, I think he ran around 60.

    800 metres – 1:44.18 (Ostrava 2020)
    1000 metres - 2:17.51 (Boston 2020)
    1500 metres – 3:29.47 (Monaco 2020)
    One Mile – 3:50.00 (New York 2021)

    he has weakness on endurance (we have seen him this year loosing two indoor 3000m).

    This is the reason he has counter performances when a mile is fast.

    At Tokyo, he was good in the heats but placed 11 in a fast final.

    Great post. I love to point out the logical flaws in people's arguments. And the, "And Shelby improved too much" is also shot out of the dark by Monson as she's improved 1 full minute in the 5000 and she was a 5000 runner in college.

    College pb 15:31. Pro pb 14:31.

    I wonder if that logic in those two paragraphs will make Thougthsleader go totally negative and think, "Monson's dirty as well. Afterall her coach was coached by the now banned Alberto Salazar and her coach almost certainly got too much of l-carnitine from Dr. Brown."

    Let's hope not.

    Monson also never got an outdoor track season her senior year because of COVID. Given her low 840s 3k, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect she could have run in the 1515 range.

    Track is popular in Europe. But yes the crowds differences are very noticeable.

    A material factor is that the event is held in Oslo and not in a podunk, off the beaten track, hard to get to, Finnish town.

    You’re jumping the gun a little bit. None of the best Africans were in this race. He beat them handily at Pre (a mile does favor him) but they traveled from Europe/Africa to Oregon after a good deal of traveling/racing while he trained in Flagstaff. Suspect it’ll be a closer duel at Worlds/Commonwealths. Health will obviously be a key for Cheruiyot and tactics for Tefera and Kipsang. He is definitely the favorite but we’re all expecting him to be in 3:45.x shape or better then.
    Cram did get an advantage of 200m more pacing. He ran 54.2x the last 409 and that’s a pretty sick performance. Jakob was 57.0 but did have to take on that extra 200m from the front in 28 seconds flat. I think this new era does affirm how great the 80s Brits were, on that we agree.

    Yeah, also, did we just forget that Jakob lost World Indoors a few months ago? I guess Jakob forgot to demolish that particular African..
