If you consistently undereat, your body will adjust to survive on it by slowing your metabolism. It’s not ideal though, because calories and nutrients help with injury prevention.

It's probably vastly exaggerated or he is a binge eater and he should be ashamed of himself for that video because he could negatively influence young athletes. Any young athlete who tried to copy him in this video would end up injured with health problems and anorexic. Awful and shameful video.

And I'm a 5'5", 115 lb, 61yo woman running 70-80 mpw but very slowly (typically around 9 min/mile) and I regularly eat at least 3000 calories per day. I have never been able to understand how people, both runners and non-runners, can eat so little.

Lol poor triggered vegan toddler who will have a nice pot belly and manboobs and achy broken knees when/if he reaches my age. I would rather be a 28-minute 5Ker(fortunately not yet, still in the top 99% of my age cohort) and 100% happy and healthy than be an emaciated, broken wreck like Butchart. At least he has some fast races in his past to reflect on, unlike the sad anon trolls.

Recent events should make even brain-fogged vegan pre-diabetics aware that maybe health has a value over running a 18:xx Tofurki Trot.

An average Male person his age who lives a sedentary lifestyle would eat at least 2000 cals per day so the average Male runner his age would probably be closer to 3000 cals per day. Everyone is different but he would be way below average if he ate that little or he is lying/exaggerating for a one day total that does not reflect his true average.

2000 is a bit high for someone with his body mass. Realistically though we have no clue what he is eating. Unless you see a good log from some one with everything weighted out, you should assume the number that people give you is BS. People are horrible at estimating calories. There have been numerous studies where people say they are eating 2k/day but are really eating 3k. And it is really easy to miss calories from drinks

I seriously doubt he eats this little during an average day. This may be similar to other exaggerated videos posted by other runners. Similar to the workout videos posted, where they run way faster/farther than normal. Only in this case he exaggerates by only filming an extremely light eating day.

No one posts videos of the average, but they should.

No one posts videos of the bad days, but I wish they would. I want to see people hobbling through 2 miles at 8:50 pace and then walking it back. I want to see 6000+ calorie days including the whole half gallon of ice cream and the whole package of cookies.

There is one professional endurance athlete that

does that.

How did we get to a point where it is honorable for runners to show how little that they eat and be ashamed at eating too much... what happened to the days when the likes of Bill Rodgers and others ascribed to the notion of, "when the furnace is hot, it will burn anything?" What happened to runners bragging about layering mayonnaise on cold pizza for breakfast so that they could train that much harder??

Obviously, nutrition is important, but it is not the be all-end all... I hope young people do not see this video and think this is normal behavior. I do think that we under-estimate the negative impact of modern indoor living and try to over-compensate with an over-obsession with food.

Get outside in the sun, sleep a lot, train hard, and eat lots nutritious real food,( i.e. meat and vegetables) when you are hungry... get off your smart phone and quit watching pretty boys on you tube talk about their diets (I am talking to myself here too haha)
