I was going to put out Droddy too as I recall before his breakthrough he had been running 70-80 miles per week and he was still nowhere near being a sponsored athlete. And yes Reed Fischer got signed so he is a pro athlete by definition. I think we need to really determine what one means by talent, or segment it. Yes being durable is a kind of talent but everyone posting here knows that leg speed and how quickly your body takes to your training is what we're actually talking about. When you see a kid like Justyn Knight take up running for a few weeks and runs a 15 min 5k that's what we're talking about. Gerry Lindgren was the slowest runner on the team when he started but just a few weeks later he was the fastest kid on the team by far and ran big mileage very quickly, as a high school senior he won the trials and it seemed a foregone conclusion that he'd win a medal in the Olympics if not win it. That's talent. Canova has said this before, any person without this type of natural talent can become the kind of athlete that can run 2:10-2:11 if they truly dedicate a decade + and have luck. Ultimately this is supposed to be a fun question with no real answer but the durability factor always sinks these threads.
