Jakob was and is sensibly building aerobic capacity through mileage, controlled tempo and threshold workouts, and working on leg speed through short sprints, with the only real anaerobic efforts in the early season being 200m hills. Controlling the amount of insanely hard sessions. He’s following the path of his siblings which means he’s setting himself up for a long career of international success.
NPHS does basically the opposite which is why sadly Nico Young, a great young US talent will never be a player on an international stage.
You can bookmark this and come back and shame me if I’m wrong but I’m guessing Brosnan’s plan is to be the next Salazar and once Nico is done at NAU and he runs out of talent (or everyone is hurt) at NP, he will try to start up a pro group with Nico as the centerpiece. He may even pull a Tinman and convince him at the last minute to not go to college and stick with him straight away.
Eh, too early to tell in my view.
Will the NPHS guys max out what they can gain from these types of VO2 max workouts? Yes. But Nico is going to college next year, and Smith will be much better about long-term improvement through LT work. Clearly the talent is there, and the VO2 max workouts won't change that. They just don't have as high a long-term ceiling as the LT work.
